Adjust audio gain of multiple clips?

PostFri Feb 12, 2021 1:28 am

There has to be something incredibly simple I'm missing. I'm just trying to highlight a group of clips and lower their gain by, say, 3db. In Premiere/Avid/FCP, etc, you just lasso the clips, right-click to a contextual menu, and select Gain Adjustment, type in your value, and voila. In Resolve, I know there's the Inspector tab, but if multiple clips are selected and already have keyframes, the volume slider becomes greyed out.

How on Earth do I do this in Resolve? It's about as basic as it gets, but it's not in the manual anywhere I can find...

Adjust audio gain of multiple clips?

PostFri Feb 12, 2021 2:07 am

Hi
It is actually very easy to do.
Select your multiple clips (command-click if not contiguous), then use the following keyboard shortcuts:

opt-cmd- +/= raises and lowers all by 1db

opt-shft - +/= raises and lowers all by 3db

Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, that only appears to work if there are no independent volume adjustments on the clips, Likewise, using the menu selection for those shortcuts does’t work either. A bug, possibly?

Odd, cos it works fine here, even when the audio has key frames.

Working fine for me. Selecting the clips & using the shortcut selects all clip keyframes and adjusts them all together.

You can also select the clips and click and drag on the number slot in the inspector (which shows only [--] when the selected clips have different levels applied). That will change all the selected clips by same amount. And you can force them all to the same volume by typing in a value.

The default keyboard shortcut for +/- 1 dB doesn't work with all keyboard layouts. I have a Nordic keyboard and had to change it to something else.

As a point of interest, Gain and Volume aren't the same thing, though they have similar effects.

Currently, Resolve has no ability to adjust clip Gain, only Volume for clip instances.

If you'd like to see Gain adjustments added:

Aha, found the problem - one of the hundred clips I was trying to lower was already lowered to zero, therefore Resolve wouldn't allow ANY of the clips to be lowered when I was lowering them all together.

Ideally, Resolve would use a dual "Gain and volume" system, like Premiere. In Premiere, even if one of the clips is lowered to zero, you can still do a global gain reduction, because Gain and Volume are two different attributes.

Or, Resolve just allows you to lower the volume on a bunch of clips, even if one is already at zero.

Feature request time!
