Connect playhead to sound clip whilst moving sound clip

PostSun Feb 14, 2021 3:16 pm

Newbie question that is strangely difficult to find an answer to!

When I am doing sound design for video in Protools I am used to having the picture follow the sound clip when I move the sound clip around (Slip mode). This makes it very easy to sync sound effects to film.

I have not found a way to do this in Resolve. Can anyone help me on this?

You can Link a video clip to an audio clip so they move in sync. Below are some excellent training materials. The books are especially good as they come with lessons to complete as you read.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Fairlight Option 1 - Resolve 17
Enable Edit Selection Mode in the toolbar, mouse select the Clip with one of the Trim > Nudge shortcuts.

Fairlight Option 2 - Resolve 16 or 17
Place the Playhead prior to cutting the Clip (Command + X) with Playback > Step One shortcuts.

Thanks for the tips but I think I didn't really make my self clear. I don't want to link the clips. I want to move the sound clip (which is edited so that the start of the clip is the start of the sound I want to sync with the film) so that I see where it is relative to the image.

In this way it is very easy to sync sound effects to the picture: just move the clip to where it starts relative to the image and release it. Sync in a jiffy!

This works very well in programs like Protools and Logic - so I am wondering why it is not this easy in video editing programs.

Well, typically you'd move the playhead to the appropriate frame and then move the clip to start at the playhead position. With Snap on, it works well.

Personally, I find it easier to all the editing on the Edit page, the use Fairlight just for mixing and effects.

There is no need to link Clips. Did you attempt either of the suggested options?

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I do not want to link the clips but what I want to do is move a sound clip whilst I see where in the clips "leading edge" is relative to the film.

It is such an obvious workflow in a digital audio work stations that I am surprised it doesn't work that way in video editing programs. Maybe this thread will inspire Blackmagic to create this workflow in Resolve.
