Undo is a disaster: Do not use (update: cause found)

At least this is true in beta 9, on Mac OS 11.2.1.

Undo doesn't seem to ever undo the last action. What it will do appears to be almost arbitrary. I've had it shift timeline contents great distances, or delete all timeline contents... and re-do does not work. Therefore you can't recover from the corrupt Undo.

I eventually had to start saving after every consequential action, and use Revert instead of Undo.

Beware.

Yes, I noticed something similar on Windows10 R17 beta 9. Undo usually seems to work, but sometimes acts crazily on volume control points with multiple keyframes.

Redo has never worked for me, not in 16, not in 16.2, and not in 17 b8 and beta9. I just assumed it wasn't implemented, and I save like a madman.

Do you have any specific steps which shows the problem?

A video recording perhaps and a DRP as a starting point for the video would help.

Do you have live save enabled?

I can no longer reproduce. The volume keyframe oddity must have been related to something else for my situation. If I catch it recurring, I will capture the requested info.

Interesting to note: Re-Do never worked for me because I was using CTRL-Y (the Microsoft Re-Do, not the Shift-CTRL-Z in the Edit menu) so ignore that complaint, user error.

I've not encountered any anomalies using either Undo or Redo in any of the 17 betas.

As I test a lot of issue folks report in the forums, I use those features a lot.

Here's a video of Undo malfunctioning.

I don't see the term "live save" in the UI, preferences, menus, or documentation.

DRP file attached. Oh wait, no it isn't, because this asinine forum software offers to let you upload attachments, but rejects every file format I've ever tried... AFTER wasting your time by letting you select it.

Two suggestions:
1. Fix the upload function to allow the file formats we would expect to upload: video, audio, pictures, and projects. Duhh.
2. TELL US WHAT FORMATS ARE ALLOWED IN THE "UPLOAD ATTACHMENT" pane. Again, DUHHHH.

Well that ain't normal!

My first thought is check your shortcuts. You might not be engaging Undo.

On another note: Preferences>User>Project Save and Load>Save Settings>Live Save.

Good thinking, but... Command-Z is mapped to Undo as expected.

Thanks for the info. Too bad "Live save" is undocumented. There's not even a ToolTip on the checkbox. What is it? Save after every action?

A-HA!

But... Jim was on the right track. After Rohit alerted me to the existence of the edit history display, I could see what commands were being executed instead of Undo. They were the last two here:

So now I could search the key assignments for "delete." And yep, we have a corrupted keymap:

Obviously I wouldn't have assigned Command-Z to those, nor should the GUI have allowed multiple assignments to one key even if it had been pressed by accident. The only change I made to my key assignments was changing the Delete key to "delete selected" instead of "ripple delete."

Removing the erroneous entries eliminated the erroneous behavior and allowed Undo to work.

Oh, and in this situation, "live save" was a double disaster: It saved after the erroneous undo, blowing away all your work AND saving the project. Egads!

That's actually a new feature. ;)

Yay! I'm going to make my Undo key a "finish my project" key!

Then again, it kinda was that... just not in a good way.
