correct workflow with mixed resolutions and fps?

PostWed Feb 17, 2021 9:55 am

Hello everyone and thanks in advance for your time!

I am just starting with DVR 17 (moving from PP) and after a full day of searching without a clear answer I really hope someone can help me out

My project is to prepare short clips to stock footage, my archive consists of a variety of clips from different cameras/resolutions/fps (e.g. 2720x1530 50 fps/ 2720x1530 25/ 3840x2160 29.97/ 3840x2160 50/ 1920x1080 25/ 1920x1080 50 etc.)

I wish to edit and export each clip in its native setting, What will be the correct workflow in that manner?

From what I understand (and I hope someone proves me wrong) I need to pre-make different timelines for each configuration I have and then arrange and import each clip accordingly.
This can be quite time-consuming since the clips are all scrambled together and there are hundreds of them..

In Premiere I can import all clips to my project and then easily create a timeline for each clip with its corresponding configuration by right-clicking the clip and "create new sequence from clip"
which will automatically define all timeline settings according to the clip (res/fps)

Really wish to move to DVR, it works so much better and faster, please help

You can have timelines in Resolve with different frame rates, resolution can be changed at any time.
id put all the 25fps clips in a project, set the highest res, render that, change the res for the next clips, render etc.
create a new project or timeline, set the frame rate, res, continue.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your quick reply!
With the workflow you mentioned, I am bound to categories my work only according to the frame r./res.
But what if would like to work according to other criteria?
let me explain:
-Master folder on my laptop contains many folders from different locations/subjects
-Each folder contains many clips with varied frame rates and resolutions

Is there a possible workflow for that scenario? and is there a feature to create a timeline from a clip with the configurations automatically taken from the clip data?

Thank you !

What I would do is import all the clips into the Media Pool, change the view to List View and then you have the possibility to sort your clips by frame rate or resolution. This allows you to first of all group all the clips that have the same frame rate or resolution. You can then also add them into bins for organisation.

Then for each configuration of resolution and fps you make a separate timeline. When creating a new timeline, uncheck "use project settings" and in the format tab you can then choose your desired settings.

This way you don't need to create multiple projects.

Hope this helps

For now, that's how it's done.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

That's exactly what I've done, thank you!
