What upgrade do i need for better performance?

PostThu Feb 18, 2021 4:09 am

i edit on a 4k timeline, and while scrubbing footage works fine, once i add a few color nodes and a few transitions the whole thing starts becoming unstable, crashing occasionally and overall not working 100%

my rig

amd ryzen 5 3600
geforce 1660 super (8gb)
16g ram
ssd drive

what upgrade would make the most difference right now?

Try using Optimized/Proxy media and see if that solves your issue.

If not, looking at your specs you listed, pretty much all of them could use an upgrade (you don't specify which SSD, but they too are not all equal in performance, and you can benefit from having a dedicated SSD for the media cache).

it does work better with opt media but i want an extra boost on top of that. i just cant tell whats the weakest link

Show us (screengrab) your Task manager graphs for CPU and GPU during playback or render you consider to be low-performing. Don't forget to change Copy graph to Compute.

4k 25fps, grading and a few fusion transitions but nothing too fancy

i guess sys mem im kind of ok about but cpu and gpu memory are burning up eh?

Your GPU is 6gb and not 8gb so upgrade this if you want an easy experience in a 4k timeline. 16g of RAM is a bare minimum and 32 would be better but the GPU is spoiling the party.

no need to upgrade the cpu then?

and what kind of upgrade do i need to see a significant difference? is it just raw gpu memory i want?

No, you'll want more RAM only if Fusion plays an important part.
For you, it's Studio, GPU and CPU.

Before you buy anything, reduce the timeline resolution to HD and see what kind of performance you get. You could also try HD Optimized media, again on an HD timeline.

That aside, the GPUs you'd want to buy aren't available now, unfortunately. This would be the 3000 series rtx cards.

there are 3060s over here. im noticing the 3060 has 12gb ram and the 3060ti is faster but has only 8.

should i get a 3060 for the extra ram?

Yes. While Fusion loves CPU RAM, DR is profiting from VRAM, which is used by the GPU.

Yeah, looks like there is significant VRAM swapping. 3D usage is pretty high probably due to 4K timeline. With Nvidia it's hit and miss even with 8GB VRAM i.e. even 8GB doesn't guarantee that at one point you won't meet some performance boundary so a new 12 GB GPU may be wiser than a faster new GPU...CPU is fine IMHO, but if you're also using Fusion transitions, CPU can be a bottleneck there at the times the transitions take place...

Try HD timeline and report back, pls.

Used GTX1080gti's are pretty cheap - 11g Vram.

i mean, it does work much better on an hd timeline with optimized media... i guess i can work on an hd timeline and then change it to 4k when i want to export it and thats it.

i do notice, it gets SIGNIFICANTLY worse when i add the transitions. before that its kind of ok.

Hmmm.... Wondering about that comment to use an SSD for cache. I have my media including optimized media on 7200RPM drives in a Raid 1 connected by Thunderbolt one. I have my database on an Imac internal SSD drive.

Is the database Is where the cache files go ? I didn't see any special place to put them but if there is a choice, should I have them on the internal drive SSD? I also have an SSD connected by USB 3.

You can manage where the cache goes in the general preferences.
Or, for cache, optimised media and proxies in the Master Settings of your project.

SSDs are not only about throughput, which can be good with a spinning RAID too, but also about access times.

Is it better on the internal drive or on the USB3 SSD?
