Huge spike in CPU use when using Fusion

Hello all--

I am not a "power user" of DR (run free version 16.2.8 on an iMac with 10.14.6), mostly doing H264 clips with lots of audio. A recent project has me baffled. I was using brightness/contrast controls from the Fusion page on a clip, and the CPU spiked hugely and the computer fans started up (very rarely happens). I closed DR without saving, and found that it had been spitting out cache clips at the rate of almost one per second. I deleted said clips, tried repeating the procedure with the same result. I am not very comfortable with Fusion yet, but I have used brightness/contrast and a couple of the other basic controls in the past with nothing like this happening. Can anyone tell me what's going on, and if there's anything I need to do? Could it be a corruption in the clip file? Thanks all!

Not really that much of an expert, but from what i know, the cpu in fusion is still heavily used compared to for example the color page. And h264 is harder to decode than a format like MXF/prores. I would try to convert the footage to one of these before going into fusion.

Cache isn't C-4. :o It doesn't need kid gloves. You won't get hurt.

Let it build. ;)

Thanks Rick and Jim! I found a workaround for the effect I wanted. But the problem still remains for another time/project. The file I was trying to process was around 140 mb, 14 minutes of 1280x720 at 24 fps in h264. Is this cache behavior to be expected in making a really very simple change in brightness/contrast, so I should just let it go until gigs worth of cache files accumulate? I don't want to be blasting my computer with 4-500% cpu usage according to my processor monitor, with consequent heating up, since it isn't exactly young anymore...

Your computer has resources to be used. No point in being afraid to use them.
