Petition: Resolve needs optimize NR for Sillicon M1

PostTue Feb 23, 2021 4:38 am

I made a project with a Samsung T5 as external disk on MacBook Pro M1, using Braw 4k 12:1
I applied 4 color nodes. No problem with play, edit in a FULL HD timeline.
I let the first node, a basic NR, only for the export because was lagging all my work with 3fps.

The day after I forgot to connect the T5, so I got the project with media OFFline. But the play was about 4/5fps. Very similar with the disk connects as disconnected.

It could be possible optimize NR for Sillicon or this is what we get with this powerful Mac model?

Thank you.

This is not a powerful model, it's an entry-level machine!

IMHO, BM did a good job porting DR to the new silicon. It's very capable for the price, but NR, being a temporal effect, needs massive GPU power. These first few M1 Macs don't have that, you need to wait for the next generation or get a good desktop PC with a dedicated GPU, like the Nvidia 30XX series (if you can find one outside of the mines).
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

The M1 have very good single thread CPU performance.

And can also do amazing video stuff for the things they have dedicated hardware accelerators for (like h26x enc/dec for instance). But as soon as you get to high multi-thread or need to do something it doesn't have a hw accelerator for, the performance fall can be brutal.

It's after all a CPU mainly targeted at mobile (like laptop, not phones). Can't really compare it to a 3090 ...

I mean even my not so recent graphic card has the same amount of GPU mem only as the whole entry M1 chip. And that lack of mem is apparently already causing potential issues, I've seen report of Big Sur excessively swapping causing premature SSD wear (like ~ 2y estimated to ssd fail)

I doubt that SSD fail would happen so fast. And then, just get extended Apple Care if you buy one ;-)

Thanks for comments guys.

I don't have skills for develop a software. But I know some app like Handbreak, open source, doesn't need external gpu and works like a charm. Even most professional use it after export a pro res flavor from resolve.

If Braw player could add a NR before start to grading all the footage could be prepare for DaVinci. Just an easy step in order to make DR not fully dependent of expensive and enormous GPUs.

Check Final Cut NR. Very limited of course. But really faster. Or Apple Compressor. Anyway, just a a petition, in order to make DR more portable and efficient with Braw ecosystem.

See you!

I don't really get what you expect from an entry-level machine. The MacBook Air M1 with only 8 GB RAM can do a temporal NR with a radius of 1 and set to "faster" close to 25 fps for BRAW 4.6K in a HD timeline.
In an UHD timeline it still does 7-8 fps. In my book that's pretty impressive programming.

That's the best advice.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
