How to match drone footage?

PostTue Feb 23, 2021 6:52 pm

Hi all

We own two drones and of course I'd like to match the color of both drones as accurately as possible in Davinci Resolve.

1) DJI Mavic 2 Pro (shooting in D-Log, 25 frames, H.265)
2) Dji Mini 2 (shooting in the Standard profile (Rec.709(?), 25 frames, H.264)
Color temperature was pre-set to 6500k on both drones since it was quite cloudy.

I'm doing a color match with the Xrite Colorchecker Passport Video. For the footage of the Mini2 this works quite nicely (I left everything on Rec.709 and the colors turn out well).

When I try to match the footage of the Mavic 2 Pro, the nightmare begins. If I use DJI Dlog as source gamma and and Rec.709 as target gamma/color space, everything gets dark and oversaturated, if I try other combinations (e.g. source gamma on "auto" etc.) the footage either gets washed out, oversaturated, too flat but never ever right.

I also tried to solve it with manually grading it by using a magic window but it just never matched. I am quite frustrated now. :-(

Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?
