Bootleneck or bad configs? Choppy playbacks and more...

PostWed Feb 24, 2021 2:15 am

Hello Friends, I'm new at the Forum and as a video editor as a whole... So i apologize in advance for any noob's questions.

I'm experiencing some choppy playbacks and really long times to load the Media Pool and timeline when openning a Davinci Resolve Project.

I have the impression that Davinci is not using my machine to it's full potentional and i don't know if it is a bottleneck problem or that my system configs do not meet the requirement for Davinci Resolve.

The most strange thing is that sometimes when I'm editing 6k or 4k BRAW footage everything goes smooth, but when I'm editing Full HD S-LOG 2 footage from a old Sony a7S things get really slow and choppy. This is suposse to be normal?

I no my PC is not the fastest one but sure is not the slowest... for me the performance on Davinci Resolve is really inconsistent... Am i doing someting wrong?

I'm sorry my doubts is all over the place, but i don't know the right direction to solve my problem. And I'm sorry about my grammar, i'm still learning english :(

Thank you guys for any help.

My system is:

Davinci Resolve Studio 17 Version 17.0B BUILD 33

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core Processor

This is normal if you use the free version on a PC. It decodes BRAW just fine and you can work up to UHD in your timeline. But Sony and other footage with H.264/265 compression will need the Studio version to be decoded by hardware instead of the slow software decode. Your machine should suffice (and your English does too).
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Studio 19.1.3
MacOS 13.7.4, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580 + eGPU
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM, MacOS 14.7.2

Hey Uli Plank, thanks for your answer my friend.

I'm using the Studio version, do i need to change any configurations to work with others codecs beside BRAW?

Normally it should be set, but check your "Decode Options" in the preferences.

I found out that i had change the render mode from "Smart" to "User" so the Davinci did not render automatic, this is why was taking forever to playback the time line...

[FIXED] Playback > Render Cache > Smart
