Activating DR 16 Studio

PostWed Feb 24, 2021 2:38 am

I'll be contacting support tomorrow, but how in the heck do I activate my studio version?

I was running DR 16 Free for the last four months.

I tried downloading DR 16 Studio from the website and installing that, but nothing changed. No option to enter the key on startup after that install.

I've searched the manual for activate and license key. Searched the forum too.

Bummed the Speed Editor (different post) bombed out tonight.

I was hoping to get access to Speed Warp to rerun a render tonight that had some artifacts and the FREE version (with watermark) showed it cleared up the issue.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction tonight on this.

A tad bit frustrated.

Thanks.

Matt

Studio builds are a different download. Your symptoms indicate you ahve the free build installed.

• Go to https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... ciresolve/.
• Click on the Download Now button.
• Choose the quadrant that says "DaVinci Resolve Studio 17 Beta" - and click on the button that corresponds to your OS.
• In the form that follows, click Download Only.
• Unzip to a new folder, and click install. No uninstallation needed* when switching between Free and Studio.
* (edit: I was corrected here - an uninstall is needed if you're on Windows)
• On first start up, you can enter the activation key on the splash screen.

As for the speed editor, DaVinci Resolve 17 Beta 1 is the first version to introduce support. You can't use it with version 16. Link to Release notes for v17 Beta 1 - check under the Cut page section.

Thanks for the response. That's exactly what I did.

The only difference is that I downloaded Studio for DR 16. The file I downloaded has "Studio" in the name.

Perhaps an uninstall is required on the Mac as well. I'll be giving support a call today.

They really should make it more apparent that the Speed Editor only works with DR 17. It's no where on or in the box, there is no manual and you have to either find that info in the DR 17 manual or DR 17 release notes. Not exactly intuitive...especially if you don't know it's compatible only with 17.

Heck, the the color promo flyer inside the speed editor was promoting the free version of DR 16. My free Speed Editor shipped with DR 16 Studio. Perhaps that's a reseller issue and they don't know it either.

Not sure I'll be using the Speed Editor anyway due to the BT interference. It made my BT keyboard and mouse go bonkers and I had to finally put the thing in a metal container (no off switch) on the other side of the house to get my keyboard and mouse functional again. No on/off switch is a serious hardware design flaw IMHO.

I'm going to ask support about the interference as well. I might consider upgrading to DR 17 Beta if there is fix for the BT interference. If not, I guess I can always sell it. I had planned on purchasing Studio, the Speed Editor was a bonus.

For anyone searching with a similar problem, I am posting a follow up.

Finally got in touch with support this afternoon. He was able to install the free version on top of Studio and there was only one version post-install. So he had me re-download Studio and install it again.

No luck this time either. It would appear you have to uninstall the Mac version as well - at least for going from DR 16 Free to DR 16 Studio. Perhaps if you are going from DR 16 Free to DR 17 Studio it would work.

I used the Project Manager backup function and for good measure just zipped the database folder as well. I am a little nervous doing this with open projects.

Thanks for the post above. Cheers!
