Playback dropping frames after leaving resolve idle

PostWed Feb 24, 2021 5:50 am

Hey everyone,
First just want to say how amazing this new version is turning out to be, tons of my issues with resolve 16 have been solved in version 17.

However, I seem to have some weird playback issues every now and then that will either require a full computer reboot or just a restart of resolve. While editing videos I have to reference stuff in chrome/firefox/safari pretty often, and in resolve 16 this was never an issue, just click on my open chrome/firefox/safari window over on my other monitor, reference the page, and back to editing. However in 17, sometimes when I click outside of resolve and go back in my playback fps drops to 2-5fps rather than the expected 30fps of my source.

My source footage is BRAW from my BMPCC4k (tried all different compression settings) and is usually stored on a network drive, however I have tried playing back directly from the SSD I recorded on and I still see the issue.

I have tried this on 2 different machines and I have seen the same issue on both machines. One machine is my M1 mac mini and the other is my iMac 2019 i9 with 580X graphics, and 32gb ram and reporting back if the issue persists. For what its worth, I've also seen the same issue on my hackintosh (i7 8700k, dual RX570 GPUs, 23GB ram, big sur)

If anyone else has had these issues it'd be nice to know I'm not alone, otherwise what info would be needed to help get something like this resolved.

Thanks!

I've had weird stuttering issues in Resolve that seem to be fixed by just shoving an empty adjustment layer over the top of the project, not sure why this works but it's stopped about 90% of any stuttering issues and made playback super smooth

Maybe it'll work here for you, if it's just the playback and not the entire software itself

I recommend a third approach.

An internal Media drive.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

So I think I've narrowed it down, and this may be a different post in a different part of the forum, but it seems like this behavior only happens when im using my Decklink mini monitor 4k. If I disable the output, the playback is fine.

I applied the latest update to the decklink, but it didnt seem to help.
