iMac Pro with more CPU core or GPU Memory?

PostWed Feb 24, 2021 7:37 pm

Hello Everyone

I’m looking to buy an iMac Pro with 64 GB RAM

With the budget constraints I have I can only order one of the below options.

Option 1 - 10 Core CPU with Radeon VEGA 64 (16 GB) GPU
Option 2 - 14 Core CPU with Radeon VEGA 56 (8 GB) GPU

I generally work on commercials. Premiere and resolve for editing and all my colour grading happens on Resolve.

Footages I work are RED, Alexa and Sony FS7 mostly.

Any recommendation on which of the option do I choose? Should I go for more cores or more memory on GPU?

While personally I wouldn't invest in a new Intel iMac any more, I suggest to go for the VRAM.
A "GPU memory full" message means you are stuck, while fewer cores only make it a bit slower.

My advice would be: tell us what you have now and there might be a limited upgrade path for the time being. If you don't want to switch to Windows and need it NOW, you can look for a second-hand iMac (non Pro) with a good GPU. They should get cheaper by the day, since more and more people learn that we'll see killer machines based on M1X (or whatever they'll call it) before the end of 2021. The iMac Pro will be an overpriced dinosaur by then.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
