Optimal (quality) OBS video encoder for DaVinci Editing -

Hello,

I'm new to DaVinci Resolve and am going to begin recording / exporting 4k footage (up from 1080p) and was hoping to get some clarity on this.

I record tutorial videos using OBS (I don't stream) and do some light camera work. I'm wondering what video encoder I should use in OBS to export footage in the highest quality format that's compatible / optimized for editing in resolve? I use the free version of Resolve (for now) so I don't believe the hevc_nvenc encoder would work for me as it outputs h.265 (I've heard this is the best one to use for screen recordings). Is there another option in place of this for near-lossless quality? The videos are max 30 minutes so space shouldn't be too much of an issue. Do any of you have any insight / advice here?

Some background info:

• Will record and render in 4k
• OS is Windows 10
• Using DaVinci Resolve 17 (free)
• I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 TI (relevant for OBS but not sure this is relevant for resolve b/c I use the free version)
• Intel i7 9700
• 32gb RAM

My current OBS Output settings:

• Container Format: .mov
• Video Encoder: h264_nvenc
• Video Bitrate: 30,000 Kbps
• Keyframe interval: 300
• Audio Bitrate 320 Kbps
• Audio Encoder: aac

I always recommend hardware recorders for screen capture you intend to edit. They typically offer editing friendly options like DNx and ProRes, whereas software normally doesn't.

I would use mkv as your container. In the event of a crash, you won't lose your work, and you can remux it almost instantly to mp4, which will work with Resolve. The rest looks fine. If you're not already doing it, you can assign your audio sources to separate tracks for a recording, which could save you if you have some mixing issues during recording.

While I second the recommendation for .mkv, it can hide one problem. When I checked my original .mkv out of OBS with MediaInfo, it seemed to be CFR. After re-wrapping it was shown as VFR, which many recordings out of OBS actually are.

This can cause all kinds of trouble in DR, most frequent ones are audio sync issues for lengthy recordings. So, until any screen recorder can handle this issue flawlessly (other are even worse), I can only second Jim's advice: get hardware recording!
