Hi Guys,

Been using DaVinci Resolve for years now pretty much issue free - just updated to 17 and now the wheels have come off... So I first installed the new version and it wouldn't start, splash screen came up and then it crashed. Rebooted, nada, uninstall and reinstall and now it'll start, but it won't play anything.

The media imports fine, shows up in the pool, but it never loads a thumbnail, and when I put it into the timeline it won't let me play it, I can't scrub through, and literally nothing shows anywhere.


Specs:
Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
32GB RAM
AMD FirePro W5170M 2GB

Nothing rocket hot, but like I said, never had issues running it before... It feels like a codec issue, but I don't remember ever needing codecs before?

I'm having the same issue but I was wondering if there was a mismatch between frame rates and / or resolution....

You don't provide even basic info like OS and driver version you use.
Please post full logs and NFO ... see FAQ for how to generate.

I wish I could help, but I'm having the same problem - database updates fine, media imports as expected but the thumbnails are blank, timeline knows how long the project is and which effects have been applied, but there's nothing actually showing, it won't play and won't scrub.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling etc with no luck.
Have rolled back to DR 16 until I can find what went wrong.

I ended up uninstalling DR 17, searching for any folder named 'Davinci' and deleting that as well. Re-installed DR 17 - it ran through the welcome and what's new screen. All back to normal

I think I might have messed up a setting or option and this seemed to be the only way to reset it.

All, hopefully, needed info

How can I uninstall update 17 or roll back because it doesn't show me the whole soundtrack, only a narrow green bar.

Was normal, now fallen over again.

It Will work until I try and extend a still image and then it flickers between that still image and either a black screen or a single frame of the video on the track below.
Videos are now looking like this in the media folder.

Krzysztof, try this.

Leo and Lee, what is the source of your video clips? What codec, resolution, and framerate are they? If they are 10 bit files you will need the Studio version of Resolve to play them.

I can't play anything. Blank thumbnail, blank video, no audio for everything (videos & images).
The same with my old projects and the new ones.

I downgraded again to Radeon Software 20.11.2 Recommended (WHQL). After restart, I opened my project and I could play the video properly. I closed the program, reopened it and I have the same issue. I'm confused.

If you have a separate GPU, your monitor should be plugged into that and not the on board graphics connector.

Its the only way to connect my monitors (GPU), so it's not that.
Also, Davinci stays in background after quitting.

I upgraded mine to 21.2.3 (released 17/20/2021) and it appears to be working now (fingers crossed!)

Sorry, Leo, I can't help with an AMD GPU as I use Nvidia.
As to Resolve not closing properly, a number of people experience this. I can only speculate that it is caused by a background process not stopping. This does not occur on my system. It always fully quits when I exit the program.

I still have the problem. I would be grateful if anyone could help...

When I'm installing the last version (amd 21.2.3) and checking ✔️ the option "Restore the factory settings", then Resolve only works once! After reopening, I have the same issue.
And I have to repeat the same path.
Any thoughts?

I have no idea what it doe that on your system, but the "work once" is probably cache related.

Shaders are lengthy to compile into GPU specific code, so the drivers usually cache the compilation
result so that subsequent re-use of the same shaders is faster.

Still can't figure out how to solve the problem and the staff can't help me I guess...

i having the same problem. the screen shot i see above is exactly what I get. I've uninstalled and reinstalled DR17 6 times. I've tired to install DR 16 it wont take at all.

I'm experiencing the same disheartening issue. I accidentally updated to 17 without installing 16, or reading any warnings. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the free version of both 16 and 17 multiple times. All my footage is H.264 encoded from a GoPro Hero 7 Black for vlogging and testing. Media used to work perfectly fine in DR16 then nothing after the update or any subsequent reinstall. I've gathered all the info I can.

I have an AMD Radeon PC. I was use Resolve 17 OK up until a week ago then I installed the update. Since then I have experience the issue described above. No thumbnails, videos not showing and no audio play.

I would appreciate any advice.

I wish I could help, but I've still the same problem even after three updates for V17. None of them fixed it for me, so I'll keep using Resolve 16 until we get something that will fix things.
Maybe a roll-back to V16 will be a work around for you, too.

I'd like feedback on this issue after todays 17.3.1 release.

If you see this issue please provide details so someone can try to repo.

Could you try disabling the onboard Intel graphics?

Could you share logs when running with the latest please?

I experience this exact problem as well. No sound and no video, also no thumbnail, but showing bars in the timeline just fine.

I downloaded DaVinci resolve 17 for the first time yesterday on a new HP Omen.

I updated the NVIDIA Studio Drivers, Bios, also reinstalled Resolve, but not changes.

I also experience instant crashing when I open Fusion and do a right click on the node area. Is this just due to my Laptop not being strong enough for Fusion?

I may have stumbled upon a solution for this issue with a YouTube search. Try going to Windows Settings, System, Display, scroll down to a blue link 'Graphic Settings', where it says 'choose an app to set preference': click browse and navigate to the Resolve.exe and choose it, then highlight that and choose 'options' and pick the 'High Performance' option. Once set, you can close out of settings and start Resolve 17. Also, make sure that you have CUDA set for your Graphics Card in the Resolve Preferences. This worked for me this morning and I'm now able to run Resolve 17 on my Acer Nitro 5 with a Ryzen 5 4600H processor, 16GB Ram, NVidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU with 4GB ddr6 Ram.

Thanks for this. I tried it, and managed to at least have audio play correctly in the Fairlight tab, but not in Edit where everything is still frozen and no images or clips will load.
Have gone back to V16.2.8005, which continues to work nicely.

I have been using Resolve for over a year and it's been great. Updated to 17.3.1 on my main rig with AMD discrete graphics and Ryzen and now I have this problem. I have tried uninstalling, re-installing, reverting to 17.2.1 and nothing works.

I removed the Radeon software and only used the Windows driver, no change.

Curiously, my backup laptop with a Ryzen and Nvidia upgraded to 17.3.1 and is fine.

I really need my main rig to work, with 2 32 screens, etc. What else could I try?

I am new to Resolve. I had v16 yesterday, did my first video edit. I exported the video and I had no image... just sound.


When I opened it today, same issue as seen here, the video doesn't work anymore. So I updated to v17.3 but same problem.

Please start with generating DaVinci Logs, the FAQs describe how and then post a link to them here.

And if you can detail more info on the GPU that will help as it likely a GPU driver issue.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the V17 problem, because I have it, too and still no solution.
But, for the audio only export problem - try re-installing V16 first and see if your original video footage loads and plays properly.
Then when selecting your options "Video" "Audio" "File" on the "Deliver" tab, make sure to choose "Video".
If "Audio" is selected, you will only produce a sound file.

Lee, that is not the case. Under the Video tab you need to make sure the box labelled Export Video is checked, and under the Audio tab that the Export Audio box is checked. It doesn't matter which tab you have open, it will not affect the outcome of the render.

Thierry, if when you installed version 17 you also updated your database without making a copy of it first, you will not be able to open your project in 16 as the version 17 database is not backwards compatible.
If your laptop's Radeon Graphics uses shared memory and does not have any of it's own VRAM, you will find it underpowered for running Resolve. The minimum requirements to run Resolve properly with HD video are 16GB of RAM and a GPU with 2GB of onboard VRAM.

Has anyone had any luck with this issue?

I uninstalled AMD Radeon software and downloaded their clean utility. I uninstalled REsolve 17.3.1.

I then installed the AMD driver from May and Resolve 17.2.1, which I know was working fine before installing 17.3.1 and I still have the issue!

I was going to commit to studio but not after this. Really seems to be AMD oriented, at least for me.

I can archive a small project from the system not working and import it on 17.3.1 on a backup laptop with NVIDIA and no problems.

Any help would be appreciated!

It seems to be a problem on Pc, because I installed Resolve 17.3.2 on my MacBook Pro 2018, and now I'm having fun with the software. I guess an update will fix the issue ?

I've had this problem, I was prompted to upgrade from 16 to the newest 17.3.2.
I had been wary of doing this just because I was at the end of a big project and did not want to risk anything.
Anyway I decided to upgrade and everything was working fine and then randomly no video would show up on the timeline etc
It has lead me to this post.... I went back to 16 and it worked fine but I actually want to use 17 because it is awesome, I decided to install the very first DR 17 in the support center, it is working for the time being but I will report back in a few days.

BTW I am on a 2017 iMac, so I don't feel like it's just a PC problem.

I was excited to try 17.3.2 and see if it resolves the issue but it didn't same issue.

At this point I've tried all 17.x versions or resolve. Done several clean installs of AMD drivers for RX 580 with 4 GB VRAM. Nothing improves the issue.

This system had been working fine since the first 17 version so my database is updated and can't go back.

I'm dead in the water.

Please help

If you backed up your database(s) before updating, you'll be able to import them into V16 when you reinstall.
I know, because I've done it about six times by now.
Just uninstall V17 and reinstall whichever version of 16 was working for you, then import your database.

@Jon: Please provide a Windows System Information .NFO file.

Open the Windows System Information app, then select File - Save to generate the .NFO file with your system info.

I had been using 17.2.X for some time, so I can't really revert to 16.X like some others without losing work.

I've attached the requested file. I'm technical and can investigate any suggestions/troubleshooting.

I have the same GPU on Windows as you. I've updated to the same 21.8.2 AMD driver you are using. I've installed 17.3.2. My system works. Your system is having OpenCL issues.

The difference appears to be that you have a Citrix indirect Display Adapter installed, according to the Windows System Information - Components - Display list.

Can you remove or kill that, and see if Resolve works then?

@Dwaine, well done! killing it didn't work but a complete uninstall and reboot worked. I had wondered about Citrix. I normally install it on a VM for my work but the latest version works better with a 2 monitor setup. Now I know why, Lol

It's weird that it worked at one time but Citrix does constant updates so it must have squashed Resolve prior to the 17.3.2 and was a coincidence.

Any thoughts on getting citrix to work with Resolve?

Either way, just happy to have my rig back! Thanks for you help.

the Citrix IDD driver you had installed (12.40.44.247) was from 2019. There are several newer drivers. Perhaps a newer driver would work better. Or not...

I leave that as an exercise for interested parties.

@Jon: Could you clarify the behavior you were having?

Was Resolve hanging during launch? Or was it launching, but not showing video when you loaded clips?

Or what, exactly?
