Resolve 17 installation not possible

PostThu Feb 25, 2021 6:26 pm

When I start to install Resolve 17, I get this message:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removeable disk that is not available.
Insert the Da vinci Resolve disk and click OK"

Why is that, how can I install Resolve (never had this problem before)

Andreas,

Was the installer downloaded from the Blackmagic website?
Can you try explicitly unzipping the downloaded file and run the unzipped exe file?

Thanks

Hello Shrinivas,

yes, the file was downloaded from BM support site. I used the unzipped exe file, and unzipped it twice to check, if the unzipping was faulty...problem still there

Very annoying!

Possibly a silly question but you are installing onto your system drive aren't you? I ask as the error message is referring to removable media.
Does your version 16 installation appear in the Programs and Features menu where it should be uninstalled from?

Version Davinci Resolve 17.1, I can't install

PostWed Mar 10, 2021 4:00 pm

Hi
Unfortunately version DR 17.1 still has the same problem as DR 17.0 about the installation. It's not possible to install V 17.1 because the requires a CD-ROM. Message: "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available", "Insert the DaVinci Resolve disk and click OK".
But I have no disk? :(

You are the only person I've ever seen post such an issue. It's got to be something wrong with your system, so...let's go fishing. :)

What version of Windows are you using? (Use the 'winver' command to find this out. You can search the 'Net for directions.)

What is the name of the exe file you're trying to install?

Hi,
Thank you very much for your answer. Following my answer to your questions:

I am not the only one who has this problem. See Post from Andreas Schwarz (Feb 25.2021)

My system: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU, 4.00GHz, 16.0 GB RAM, Windows 10 Pro version 20H2, Build 19042.884, GeForce BTX 960
File: "DaVinci_Resolve_17.1_Windows.exe" downloaded from the official site of Black Magic.
The problem exists since version 17.1b10, 17.0, 17.1. With 17.0b9 the problem does not exist. The problem ist also that I can't uninstall the current installation becuse the uninstall process requires also the external drive. (see post from Andreas Schwarz)

Dear Petere

I agree with Andreas. It's not a System Problem because the installation process ask for a file called "ResolveInstaller.msi". Anyway, see in the attachment the two files.

The NFO file I can't send is to large and txt is not allowed.

Never ever seen this problem with uninstalling and installing any version of Resolve from 14 through all the betas to 17.1.
You usually see this sort of message if the software was installed from a CD ROM, which as we know Resolve isn't, and it contains the uninstaller.
Have you tried unzipping the downloaded program again in case there was an error? I always use Windows own Extract tool for this.

Yes, I tried 17.1. also....before I tried to install resolve 17, I could normaly reinstall Resolve 16. I did this twice or so...but now, no deinstallation possible. This is little kind of frightening, cause I have paid work to do. I will try nothing, until I have my second worstation in a few weeks (hopefully)

ResolveInstaller.msi Today, I solved this problem perfectly. Let's leave a footprint. Solution: it's caused by incomplete software unloading. After searching for half a day, I think it's possible. I'll find a trial version of Revo uninstaller and search Da to delete all da Vinci's files, so it's perfect to reload. To be clear, there is no proper meal.

Re: Resolve 17 installation not possible

HI

Unfortunately, Blackmagic Designe could not provide a solution. Installing, updating and uninstalling of DR is still not possible, because an MSI file is always requested. Also the “ResolvePackage.log” shows an error called “Installation success or error status: 1603”.
Therefore, I took an unorthodox method and removed manually all Blackmagic files on the PC, as well as all registry entries. Very tedious and hard work!

Also after this action, a new installation was still not possible (MSI file was still requested).

After that I found entries in the registry concerning "ResolveInstaller". I deleted these in the directory of the registry.
«HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1724979170-2830540316-3455985885-1001\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Installer\Products» «HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Installer\Products»

After that it was able to reinstall DR. As it looks, everything works. It seems that these two directories were corrupt. Because when I compared them with a correct working installation, they were different.

Kind regards
Pius

I solved the problem with the tool "Troubleshooter" from Microsoft (Link below).
The program didnt finish correctly, but it deinstalled Resolve 16, and the installation of Resolve 17 was possible.

Re: Resolve 17 installation not possible

The issue it appears is that when performing an installation, a ResolveInstaller.msi file is written out a the time of installation. I don't know what the intended path is for this .msi file, but in my environment, where the path of the original installer is usually in a read only directory on a server, the .msi file gets written to C:\Users\MYUSER\Temp\Local\2\. At some point, the contents of this directory is going to be lost (Temp, it's in the name), and unless a backup or copy of this file was saved somewhere else, you will not be able to uninstall, or update in place, your already installed version of DaVince Resolve Studio.

If this file is required at all, and has to be kept, then it should be stored in a place that won't get erased unless and until the program itself is properly removed, like maybe in the Program Files folder itself.

I have run into this issue with every minor version of 16 and 17.

Thanks,

Alan.

«HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1724979170-2830540316-3455985885-1001\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Installer\Products» «HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Installer\Products»

After that it was able to reinstall DR. As it looks, everything works. It seems that these two directories were corrupt. Because when I compared them with a correct working installation, they were different.
I wasn't able to use Davinci Resolve on my main PC for over a year until I found this very solution here. Nothing else worked for me except for THIS ONE

Note that "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1724979170-2830540316-3455985885-1001" won't exist for you. The numbers will differ. The important part is the "-1001" at the end. In "Products"-Folder you will see Installations that created a .msi file. If you expand a folder furtherly and click "SourceList" you will see the Name of the installer you executed next to "PackageName".
So just delete the Folder which contains "DaVinci_Resolve_XX.X_Windows" in the subfolder and execute the installer again
