Combining classic primaries and HDR palette.

Hello!

DaVinci Resolve instructor here.

All my students are loving the new HDR palette.

The one question they have is: can you normalise your footage using just HDR and not use Lift/Gamma/Gain and Offset at all?

From my testing, I think it is possible to normalise with just the HDR tools, by combining contrast, pivot, global exposure, and then zone adjustment.

One the other hand, one could perfectly use first classic Offset/Lift/Gamma/Gain and maybe Log for a first pass, and then, in another node, use HDR to fine tune it, or start working on the style.

For example, when footage is intentionally overexposed to avoid noise in the shadows, it would make perfect sense to maybe offset down a bit.

Of course, every shot might require a different strategy.

So, how are you all incorporating the new HDR palette?

And how are you (if at all) combining it with the classic primaries?

Keep in mind that the majority of my students grade in SDR environments.

Thanks ahead for your contributions!
