Davinci Resolve Speed Editor not connecting via Bluetooth

PostSun Feb 28, 2021 1:25 am

I've tried everything I know, but with the lack of documentation that comes with the device I'm flying blind here.

Via usb, everything works fine. On my Mac Bluetooth is recognized and connects right away, but in Windows 10 Pro, it's a nightmare. Via usb, it works. But it will not connect via Bluetooth. When it does recognize the Speed Editor it just says to try connecting again. It always fails.

In Windows, the Speed Editor is recognized in the Panels setup when connected via USB.

Any suggestions are appreciated. My computer has Bluetooth 5.0

Have you tried, in Windows, removing the Speed Editor from the Bluetooth list then re pairing in Windows. Then try with Resolve.

When i got my speed editor, the blue tooth connection was very unreliable (windows box). I had a spare external BT antennae kicking around, plugged it in, and have not lost the connection since. Some internal BT's just are not good enough.

I'm having the same issues with BT at the moment.

Having the device wired my PC has no issues finding the Speed Editor, but via BT it is invisible, even after the system searched for it.

My phone has no issues connecting via BT, so it's not that. I'm just guessing the Editor needs a little bit of a stronger signal to get a proper link.

I will order a BT dongle that I can plug into my keyboard, and see if that will solve it.
Cable wise I'm running out of ports, so if I can use the Editor wireless, that would help ;)

I'll get back on this as the dongle arrives and is plugged in.

I found this out because I too was trying to improve the Bluetooth signal. At first I could not get it to work as the motherboard signal was too low. I got a dongle and then got it to work. After that I found the antenna extension for the motherboard and then tried to get it to work. That is when I had to delete the Speed Editor from the paired items in the windows box and re-pair to the motherboard antenna.

I am also using windows 10, speed editor is fine by cable with resolve 17, but using a BT 4 dongle which is new, it never seems to pair, always 'waiting to connect' I have remove the device many time and started over and updated and drivers.
It is fine on mac - just not windows.

all other BT devices pair and operate fine with windows, just the speed editor.

Do you also have Bluetooth on the motherboard ? When using the USB plugin Bluetooth I had to delete the Intel onboard Bluetooth to get it to work. Maybe you have a conflict between the various Bluetooth circuitry. Now I have it paired with the onboard Intel circuit with external antenna all is fine.

It seems that for as lot of people Win10 only accepts one BT dongle, so try to turn off the on-board one before reconnecting to the Editor. It seems a lot of people have issues with multiple BT hardware on Win10.

I want to thank everyone for their responses. I guess it is good to know that it's not just me having the problem. Hopefully they can provide an update to the speed editor for windows. I too have a Mac and it pairs right away and stays paired.

My PC system is brand new as I'm getting rid of my Mac Pro (Apple stopped supporting it even though it's a 12 core Zeon and works fine, but that's another topic).

I have bluetooth 5.0 on the motherboard and an antenna from the motherboard is sitting right on my desk. Bluetooth on the PC motherboard w/ antenna can see the mac mini in my kid's room so it's not a strength problem. From your responses, it seems it is a conflict with Windows 10.

This is really unfortunate because I don't have a ton of room on my desk and the extra cord running under my keyboard is a problem; especially since that was the point of the speed editor having bluetooth.

The odd thing is that I had the speed editor working via bluetooth for a couple of days, no problem. Then it just stopped.

Again, thank you for all the responses and let's hope Blackmagic provides an update.

That is why I suggested deleting from the windows paired list again. Make sure it is not in the list at all. Re boot and check again. Then re pair. If it worked once it is likely a pairing issue. For instance when I found the problem windows pairing list showed the Speed Editor with 56% battery so I thought the problem was battery level. Charged it up with a good USB charger for 4 hours and checked again. It still showed the same battery level. Then I deleted from the windows list. Re boot to make sure it was gone and re paired it now showed 89% battery and paired fine with Resolve. I would try this approach again.

Thank you. I tried that twice and still the same problem. Deleted from the list twice. When it does pair, it pairs for the time I am using Resolve. When I close Resolve and then open again, the keyboard still shows as paired in Windows, but none of the buttons light up and it just doesn't work. I've contacted support.

It is interesting that it did work for a while until you shut down and then started up again. Maybe it is Resolve that has the problem. Have you tried uninstalling Resolve and installing again ? Maybe install the latest version if you have not got that installed.

Just wanted to keep this one going if needed...

I received my BT dongle in the mail Saturday, and added it to the system via my (Das) keyboard.
Now dongle and Editor are 'eye to eye' so to speak. Nothing inbetween that could interfere.

I had to turn off the mobo BT, and a reboot, but after that pairing was instant in Win10. After starting v17 the Editor was picked up straight away and seems to function fine.

I will be using the set quite a bit this week, so I'll report back in after that.

The only thing I could think of in robert's case could be a faulty BT unit in the Editor itself. But without any way to test this, it would be hard to tell what's going on atm.

I would suggest to just get a separate BT dongle and test that one. I feel the new dongle here does a way better job than the mobo one regarding signal strength. They're dead cheap anyway, mine was 12 euro's including tax and delivery.

Re: Davinci Resolve Speed Editor not connecting via Bluetoot

After working with the new BT dongle and Speed Editor, I found that the Editor is not becoming awake on a lot of occasions, when Resolve is started.
Windows sees the Speed Editor as paired, but Resolve nor the Control Panel app see the Speed Editor.
If I unpair/re-pair the Editor, Resolve links to it and the Speed Editor works after that.

The dongle is almost flush next to the Speed Editor, so there's nothing blocking a signal.

I'm starting to think the device goes into a deeper powersave mode than planned, and it takes too long for Resolve to wake it on the first try.
I also had the Editor wake after appr. 10 minutes, while not using Resolve after starting up the software.

It's a bit annoying, and make me thinking to go back to wired mode on this one.

Yes, my understanding is that the Speed Editor will go into a power-saving hibernation mode after a period of inactivity. Hitting some keys wakes it back up again. So if you haven't used the Speed Editor in a while then you may need to do this to reactivate the Bluetooth link so that Resolve can see it.

Even though others are having problems, I'm pretty sure my Speed Editor has a Bluetooth problem. I just tried to pair it to my Mac Laptop and it would show up in the Bluetooth menu but not connect. Wired it works just fine on PC and Mac, but Bluetooth fails all the time now.

So I'm going to have to ask for a replacement. Bad news is that it took three months for this one to get to me. Hopefully Blackmagic will expedite this process so I don't have to wait long for a replacement. Thanks again everyone for the suggestions. I have tried all of them.

Tried shutting restarting laptop, restarting Davinci, restarting Bluetooth. Again, works with cable, but it is a no go with Bluetooth.
