disclaimer: no i didn't backup my projects before the upgrade.

davinci resolve is mentioning database and i had no idea it was using one. i would just create projects and deal with them. i had no idea where they were getting stored. now i don't know where my projects are

If you didn't do the Database upgrade after installing version 17 all is not lost. You can't see your projects as the version 16 Database is not compatible with 17. If you are unlikely to want to go back to your previous version of Resolve just do the Database upgrade which version 17 should prompt you to do.

Otherwise you can do the following. Uninstall version 17 and re-install the version you were using before.(Previous versions are on the BM download page, just scroll down the lefthand column).
Now when you open Resolve your Project page should show your projects. Click on the Database backup icon and save a copy of the Database.

Now uninstall that version of Resolve and install version 17 and do the Database update. Your projects should now show. If you wish to go back to the previous version you can import your backed up Database and all should be well.
If I have missed anything others will probably comment.

These instructions apply to the Windows version of Resolve. Mac may be similar.
Resolve Studio 20.01 build 6
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (572.16 Studio Driver), Win10 Home, Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Calibrated Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ & Samsung monitors for UI, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.
