Any additional information on NVLINK in DR 17?

PostTue Mar 02, 2021 12:48 am

I noticed in the update notes for DaVinci Resolve 17: "Support for NVLink high speed interconnect with supported NVIDIA GPUs." but I can't find any real information about it - including in the new features guide.

I do see that in the preferences that the GPUs are labeled with "NVLINK" if it is present, but I'm not seeing any benefit to using it. In fact, in my testing, performance is about 6% lower overall (or virtually no difference when looking at just OpenFX/NR) if I have NVLINK enabled versus with it off. The only thing I can think of is that NVLINK is being used for VRAM pooling rather than anything to do with performance, but I don't know of a good way to verify that.

I have been testing with a Threadripper Pro 3975WX with dual NVIDIA RTX A6000 GPUs (plus NVLINK bridge) with driver 461.40 and our PugetBench for DaVinci Resolve benchmark.

Anyone know of any additional information about NVLINK support in DaVinci Resolve 17?

In one of the FB groups BMD rep said nvLink is not used for memory pooling. What it is used for then, no idea.

Anyone from BMD willing to explain the cryptic release note? If it was written out it must be good for something?

Dear Resolve product manager Peter Chamberlain, what does this line about NVLink support in the release notes of Resolve v17 actually mean?

FYI - Don't know if this helps yet. Haven't tested it. But.. from NVidia

For the DR 17 / Nvidia Users - new studio driver available specifically for 17. Came out yesterday, March 17th - "New AI features in top creative apps, running on NVIDIA RTX GPUs, are changing - and accelerating - the way we create. The March NVIDIA Studio Driver provides optimal support for the latest AI-powered features in creative applications including Adobe Camera Raw, Adobe Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve 17." - https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx

Drivers can have all the NVLink support in the world, if application doesn’t use it...

Question still active, what does NVLink support in Resolve actually do in practice?

Dear Blackmagic, can anyone explain this feature from release notes in more detail than ”we have it”? It was put into release notes for a reason I believe..?

I guess release notes are wrong and there is actually zero NVLink support in Resolve. Care to remove the erroneous statement so someone won’t take it as an actual existing feature?

I'm afraid we won't get an answer.
Probably not implemented (similar to Audio Transient options on Fairlight page).

I contacted support about this and answer was basically "NVLink is a thing that pools memory, for more information ask nVidia about it". When I asked about what it does in Resolve in practice and pointed to one Rohit Gupta quote from FB forum according to which Resolve does not pool memory, answer was "whatever Rohit said". So support is basically helpless in this area and doesn't actually know squat. It took two weeks to get an answer of we don't know what we advertise in release notes.

For anyone interested, according to support "If you have a system set up with NVLink, Resolve 17 is able to behave as expected without crashing. Whilst in the future further developments may be planned to increase the capabilities of working with NVLink, currently this is all the information we have." is all this feature contains.
