How do I save a node tree, albeit an empty one, as a preset to use on all other projects?

On the color page, right click the viewer window and select - Grab Still.
This puts a Still thumbnail in the Gallery Viewer that contains all the nodes and the grade.
Stills can be used to copy grades to a clip by selecting the clip and middle-mousing the Still in the Gallery.
Then right click the thumbnail and select - Export.
This will export a .dpx file (the thumbnail) and a .drx (the node structure) file.
I save some various node structures in a dedicated folder to re-use.
To re-use, right click in the Gallery Viewer and select import.
Select the .drx file you would like to use.
Select the clip and then middle-mouse the Still to apply the full grade/node structure to the clip.

You can create the node tree then - right click on the source monitor and save it as a still. But to be able to use in all projects - convert Still to powergrade. Then when starting a new grade - open powergrade and load it - all your nodes will be there.
To make this even better before you make the initial node tree layout- throw a text on the timeline saying what it is. Then when you have it in the powergrade you can easily see what it is.

If you open up the additional panel in the Gallery Viewer, you get 3 'folders'.
One of those is PowerGrade.
If you just drag a thumbnail from the Gallery Viewer while in Still view into the PowerGrade folder, it will save it there.
Then in PowerGrade view, you can apply the grade to a clip.
No need for export/import!

Thanks guys ! great explanation ! I can't believe how much powerful Resolve is !!!

One thing to note when saving/exporting stills. If the source video has some kind of video transitions added to it. That part of the video will not have the grading applied to it. So when you apply the still to another project, parts of the clip on the other video wont have color grading.

I had to remove all video transitions from the original clip before i captured the stills.
