Trimming an Overlap Cut

I'm wondering if Resolve can do the following:
Say I have a very simple L Cut: two clips, each with one channel of video and audio. The cut occurs at one spot in video and another in audio. Thus an "overlap" or "L cut" or "J cut".
I want to trim these two transitions simultaneously (thus preserving overall sync) but I want to be able to position the playhead as needed on video or audio so I can monitor the trim from either position. Sometimes I want to make the audio work and let the video follow along. Sometimes I want to make the video work and let the audio follow along.
I've tried doing this and it seems like Resolve always wants to monitor the picture cut. Audio will be trimmed to keep sync, but I can't listen to the audio cut during the trim.
Am I missing something?
Thanks for any light anybody can shed.
