Speed Editor - buttons work but no lights at all

PostFri Mar 05, 2021 11:39 am

Received my Speed Editor and Resolve Studio yesterday.

Running on the BMD version of CentOS with Resolve Studio 17.0 downloaded yesterday so presumably the most up to date version. Connected with a USB A to C cable (no Bluetooth on this desktop).

The buttons all appear to work except for the three above the jog wheel which don't seem to change its function. None of the lights light up. I saw the briefest of flashes the very first time I plugged it in but nothing since then.

I've seen some older posts with similar issues although not quite the same. Any ideas? Faulty unit or something else? Do BMD have an engineering diagnostics utility that will test the buttons and LEDs? I would assume they'd have written something like that.

Update:
Looking through the logs, I'm seeing a lot of entries like:

Keyboard JogShuttle failed to toggle
write() failed, error 5
Keyboard LED status update failed

So it seems that Resolve itself is at least aware that there's a problem. But is it a problem with Resolve, with the Speed Editor, or with communication between the two?

Look for the utility installed by Resolve called, DaVinci Control Panel Setup. Run that and see if the Speed Editor needs a firmware update.

Hi Peter,

It's not showing any available update. It says it's running version 1.1 build 49b7e6df

Am I really the only person with this problem? Should I return the Speed Editor for an exchange?

I don't see a build number on my system (I had to connect the Speed Editor via USB for the setup utility to see it). There is a Factory Reset button. You might try that.

You have to click on the version number in order to see the build number.

I've tried a factory reset a couple of times but no change.

I've seen reference elsewhere that there can be a permissions issue with the way Linux sees the device in that it can read from it but not write to it. The error messages bear that out so it seems like a software / configuration issue.

I've not installed 17.1 yet - the release notes don't mention the speed editor specifically though.

Just updated to 17.2 and I'm pleased to report that the Speed Editor now appears to be working better - the wheel mode select buttons change its function and light up appropriately.
