Why can't we just buy the software like every other software

I wanted to take the plunge and buy the actual software but god damn... if this isn't the most infuriating way to purchase something, why can't it just be as simple as paying on their website and downloading it like every other video editing software?

Because it is not part of the philosophy.

Is that a problem for you?

Wex which is the most reputable seller in the UK, is selling the 16 version and 17 version separately at different prices...

I thought Resolve was a one off purchase and upgraded?

It is BMD-s philosophy, not ours.

Maybe 17 is sold with the Speed Editor? Did you check for that?

Nah they just didn't know that you could upgrade and I was the idiot who told them so they discontinued their cheaper 16 version

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I downloaded the software from BMDs web site, went to my german distributor in Hamburg and bought a license key. Paid for it and a few minutes later I got my activation key via mail and was able to activate DR Studio. Took me about 30 minutes total, even my breakfast takes longer.

So, I bought DR like every other software.

Paid for a dongle since it's almost always easier to just move around a dongle between systems than system keys and stuff.

BMD only offers physical 'keys' to Resolve. Either a USB dongle, or a credit card with a code. Those are your only purchase options, and they both have to be mailed out.

Some retailers will open the package for the activation code and email the code to you.

Personally, I'm not a fan of retailers opening my purchases. If David feels the same, or if his retailers won't open his package, he has no choice but to wait for the dongle/code in the mail.

Making matters worse is that there seems to be a shortage of both dongles and codes, so his wait may be weeks or even months long.

That's what he's on about.

An activation code is not a physical key. It is just a number on a plastic card. And, to be honest, if you insist of having it mailed to you by snail mail, then there is no reason to blame BMD. I guess most people have no problem to get the code by eMail or messenger. Also, most people do not need a physical dongle - the software activation gives you the freedom of two full installations on two different machines at the same time.

But I agree with you about the shortage of activation keys. That is very weird since it is just a number on a plastic card. Maybe they're out of plastic .... :D

It seems to me Blackmagic Design is a hardware business. They want to sell you cameras, panels, etc etc. Resolve, while totally awesome, is a sidething it seems. Impresive how much thought and work they put in a "side-thing" by the way. But the fact that resolve sells for 300, including up till now every update, and the fact that you get the paid version for free with any camera purchase, shows to me its not their main business.

And as long as that means free updates and this much power for only 300 eu, who in their right mind is complaining. Maybe it takes a week (or 2) to receive it, after that you have at least a lifetime use of resolve 17, and possible every other version that might come. For 300 eu!

People are so absurdly spoiled that a week (or 2) seems to long for something so great...
