Resolve 17.0 - 40% CPU Usage on Idle

PostWed Mar 10, 2021 3:49 pm

Heyho!

I just updated to Resolve 17.0 (Build 39) and since then the program is constantly eating up tons of CPU power. If I don't do anything and just leave the window on an empty frame it uses up 40% of my i7 6700k (4300 MHz) (and its at around 8.800.000 private Bytes / 5.455.000 Working set)

When working within the program it is also very slow. But it was slow before (and I am using a HDD Drive for editing and thought it was due to that). Most obvious difference to before on version 16.0 is that I basically get sound cracking no matter which segment of the video I play back, which is likely also CPU related.

Anyone have any idea on how to improve the situation?

This is what I see with Resolve sitting idle on two screens.

This is with it running.

Your figures suggest that something else is taking resources. Crackling audio is definitely a sign of lack of resources. How much RAM do you have? If your HDD is a spinner with a speed of 5400 rpm that could also affect performance, especially if the data cannot be output fast enough.

I got 32GB so I would exclude that.
But there are other issues at play as it seems. Went down to 5% after having it idle for a while. Maybe it was processing anything in the background and it didnt show (but it wasnt a one time thing as I had the same issue yesterday as well for the most time). I also realized that VLC kept crashing while Davinci Resolve 17.0 was active (that didnt happen before). This issue did not happen anymore once I changed my program to check clips to Media Player Classic.

I've just done a test with Resolve playing and a video playing in VLC at the same time. No crashing and both run normally.
Resolve is running on two screens with VLC over the top of one with Task Manager open as well. So, I don't know what the problem may be.

Alright, thanks a lot for having looked into it.

If I find any further info on other factors or how to reproduce it I will update the thread.

I've actually just seen the same using 17.1 on Linux ... (so pretty different config). The main "GUI Thread" using 40% of 1 core sitting doing nothing.

I've noticed that when new versions come out, the various caches can be invalidated and it will render them. This can make it seem like it's running hard forever. (In my case -- not sure if it's a Studio thing or not -- there may be a lot of GPU usage.)

I've switched some cache settings or let it sit and watched the red/blue to see if there was any progress.

But your issue might be something entirely different. (And my experience is on a Mac which can be different as well.)

For a couple of versions the speed has been fine. Now with the latest version 17.4.3 the issues are back.
In addition it also starts killing VLC again, so if I have resolve running and open a video via VLC video player it will die (other players work). This also happened back then Resolve had freezing the first time.
