Panasonic AVC-Intra supported in Resolve Studio?

PostThu Mar 11, 2021 9:28 pm

Hello everybody!

After having left audiovisual editing for a few years, I've started again with the Covid pandemic (yes, it is! ...) and I chose to use Davinci Resolve rather than resuming a subscription with Adobe.

I really like Resolve but there is one important point that I have a problem with: I have three Panasonic HPX370 cameras and I need to edit the AVC-Intra codec. It is clearly not supported by the free version. I am ready to buy the paid version but beforehand, can someone confirm to me that we can indeed natively import the AVC-Intra format into the Studio version of Resolve?

In the Davinci Resolve 16 Supported Codec List, it is written that it is supported under the "mov." file extension. Does it mean it should be processed before by an other software to make a "mov." file?

Thank you so much for taking some of your time to answer me!

Hi

What is the current file extension? Unless the codec is tagged as "Studio" or the file has 10-bit content, the free version should be able to read it.

Please provide a detailed snapshot of your OS, hardware, graphics drivers, Resolve version and other details.

Please provide a link to a sample file - from google driver/dropbox/another file sharing site. This allows users (free and Studio) with similar hardware to try out the file quickly.

Regards

Hello Shrinivas and thank you for your answer.

I just shot three shots with the following settings:

1- AVCIntra-50, 1080/30pn
2- AVCIntra-100, 1080/30pn
3- AVCIntra-50, 1080/60i

For the dropbox link, it looks like I canno't submit this post if it contains an URL....

As you can see on the attached screenshot, Format in Davinci Media bin appears as: MXF OP-Atom
Video codec appear as: AVC Intra 4:2:2 L4.1 and AVC Intra 4:2:0 L4.0

Please note that DVCPro HD also appears as MXF OP-Atom but this plugin works well. Only problem: I canno't shot Progressive footage in DVCPro HD on my cams and this plugin is too heavy for my long shots.

To bring them into Davinci Resolve, I go to the Media pannel and then, in the Folders panner, I click on the HD folder containing the Panasonic CONTENTS folder and the LASTCLIP.TXT file, and the video files appear in the Files Preview Panel as Offline MXF files. (you can see it on the attached screenshot)

I then accept when Davinci Resolve ask me if I want my project settings to be changed to match the Video files settings.

Thank you for you help!

Is there any way I can get around the automatic block that prevents me from sharing a URL link on the forum?

I could thus give you access to the dropbox folder which contains the samples of AVCIntra footage.

They all import and play just fine for me in V17.1 Studio.

I just dragged the CONTENTS folder from Windows Explorer into the media pool, expecting I'd need to manually link up the audio files, but Resolve just showed me the video files. When i dragged them onto a timeline the 4 channels of audio came across.

The only channel I see audio on is channel 2, but you probably only recorded on channel 2.

Hello Mike and thank you for your answer.

On my side, I dragged the CONTENT folder from Windows Exporer into the Media pool, as you did, but the files always appear as Media Offline. And I see that you are on Win 10 too, so it's not related on being on Mac or PC. (I would have thought maybe it was related to Quicktime or something like this)

So, with this confirmation that it works on Studio version, I feel confortable to buy it because it really worth it.

I just hope it is THE reason why it doesn't work on my side. Perhaps someone else would like to confirm that this is the Free vs Studio version that is the cause?

Otherwie, I will do soon.... Stay tune!

That does sound like a Free version limitation. Those files are 10 bit, which I understand is not available in the free version.
