R17.1 - macOS Requirements

PostMon Mar 15, 2021 1:11 am

Hi.

I recently updated my version to R17.1 and it works excellently, as I suspected it would :-)

One thing I did note is that the minimum system requirement for a Mac is "macOS 10.15 Catalina." Interestingly I am running it fine under "macOS 10.14.6 Mojave," and, if there is a version checker running within the installer, it clearly doesn't seem to mind.

Can anyone enlighten me as to how long this nice state of affairs will last? My main computer (a MacPro 5,1) is no longer supported by Apple and 10.14.6 is its terminal operating system (without resorting to hacks). Given the message, I suspect this 17 series will be the last but it'd be nice to know, officially-like :-)

Thanks for all the excellent work!

Resolve generally supports the current OS version and one older but we also don't as a matter of policy kill off even older versions. We do on occasions but not by policy.

v17 is not tested on Mojave, and we are already using features of Big Sur that are not in older versions so my suggestion is to plan a hardware upgrade accordingly.

Could you kindly explain what we might be missing under Catalina?

Thanks, Peter.

A further question which is relevant to hardware upgrades, is will you be using Apple Silicon (the new hardware) as your development and optimisation platform (for Mac obviously)? Or are you planning on keeping Resolve as hardware-neutral as possible? (I haven't been paying too much attention, but the new M1 devices only come with 8Gb/16Gb of memory, don't they? Are they ready for large Resolve projects?)

Thanks, again

@Mark
From my first tests, Resolve is running pretty well on that limited hardware, which consists only of entry-level models right now.
I tried MB Air with only 8 GB RAM and it works even with 12K BRAW or 8K R3D. I wouldn't doubt it works with long projects, but I wouldn't dare to build any complex Fusion projects on this.
I'm quite sure Apple will be coming out with more expensive models having more cores and more RAM when supply chains allow.
That said, I wouldn’t expect BM to drop the Intel version too soon.

17.1 is a universal binary so supports both M1 and Intel and our plan is to keep doing so for the foreseeable future.

Thanks Peter!
That's good news for everyone who, like me, upgraded last year to the Intel iMac 2020, just before the launching of the M1's. Please stick to that plan!
I will be moving on to Resolve 17.1 quite soon.

I have a Mid 2010 Mac Pro running Mojave and Resolve 17 and all is good. Right now I will stay with my old setup but I expect one of these days parts will begin to fail and I will need to upgrade. I like using up old equipment and also I think that the older Macs are better made than the newer ones. So thanks to BM for keeping us old timers going.

I currently have Davinci Resolve 16.2.8. How do I upgrade from Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6 to Mac OS 10.14.6 Mojave so that I can install Davinci Resolve 17. I currently have Davinci Resolve 16.2.8.

Here's my experience:
I downloaded and tried to install Davinci Resolve 17.1, and got the message:
‘This installer requires Mac OS X 10.14.6 or later to run.’

I downloaded and tried to instal Mac OS X 10.14.6.
I got an error message ‘This update requires macOS version 10.14.’

I tried to download macOS 10.14 from https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683, I got the message:
‘This copy of the Install macOS Mojave application is damaged, and can‘t be used to install macOS.’

I want to upgrade to Davinci Resolve 17. How do I upgrade to the Mac OS that will run that?

Heeeeeeeelp?

If that's also a machine from 2010, your maximum OS is macOS 10.13.6.
Time to move on.

If it's capable of running Mojave, try this link: https://apps.apple.com/de/app/macos-moj ... 2828?mt=12

Hi

Peter could you please tell us what features would cause problems when running R17.1.1 under Mojave?

And does anybody know which versions of Desktop video works with R17.1.1 under Mojave?
The system requirements say Desktop Video V12 is needed. But only 11.6 is supposed to be for Mojave.

Many thanks.

This person who also has Mojave reports this: “ Despite of some glitches in face refinement and unexpeted crashes. So far so good. Also HDR grading very slow with full Window aplied”.

This gives me pause and I ponder trying to work my way up to Big Sur on this old cheese grater. For now I guess I’ll try it with Mojave and see what happens. I am not a heavy DR user anyway. But I am curious if 17 beta is still available to download. I can’t see it.

Upgrading Classic Mac Pro to 10.14 Mojabbe

PostFri Nov 19, 2021 4:27 pm

I have good news for you @ChubaObi. It's quite possible to upgrade a Classic Mac Pro to 10.14.6. What's important is to upgrade the firmware from 4,1 firmware to 5,1 firmware. You also need to have the right generation of Xeon processor (you probably already have the right one). Here's how to do it:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mp ... d.2142418/

I have a 2009 now with dual X5675 processors (lower power and quieter than either an X5680 or X5690 under a dual CPU heat sink, X5690 is fine in single CPU CMP), with 96 GB of RAM and a Radeon VII running just fine under both 10.14.6 and 11.6.1 (never installed Catalina and still prefer 10.14.6, not sure I'll use 11.6 with this computer).

You would do very well to nurse another couple of years out of your Classic Mac Pro as not Big Sur nor Monterey nor M1 Macs are particularly stable right now. We're in the middle of an architecture migration and it's pretty messy.
