Hello everyone I was wondering if it's possible to use the Dead Pixels Fixer effect inside the color tab to remove pimples?

This effect is so perfect for this, but I can't seen to track the effect across the image, since a Dead Pixel would be fixed at one point.

I'm new to Davinci Resolve and maybe there is a easier way that I can remove pimples, maybe a effect just for that, if you guys could teach me I would be grateful.

Ps: I saw some tutorials using the paint mask with the clone brush inside the fusion tab, but it would be so much easier to do it inside the color grade tab while you are grading everything...

Learn about Face Refinement, that's the perfect tool for this – apart from real life makeup

You can track each one with a power window and use the node sizing to get a clone like effect or can try blurring and mid details each one.

Hey Plank, You always reply my posts, your help does not pass unnoticed... thank you for that!

I'm using the face refinement but I think this tool is overdoing, I don't want her to have a perfect skin, just want to remove this 3 pimples that is really drawing the attention.

Real life makeup would be great, but I can't go back in time... not yet at least.

There is a way I can mask the face refinement to a single spot?

Or a way I can link a power window to move the dead pixel node?

I can understand you very well, I also don't like that plastic look on faces.
I have not yet tried if you can mask Face Refinement, but what you could do is make a countermask and replace all the rest of the face with an untreated version. Use a layer node to combine them.

I usually use the “beauty” plugin, i find it much more versatile than the face refinement.

just finished a film with a scene where the actor had some pimples when pickup's were done, and none on the filming day (or better pretty dept on the main unit)

used this method for 14 shots, took around 15 min to get all of them done, added some noise back inside the mask to match camera orig a bit

was done before the director and DP were back with an espresso for me, matched the main unit shoot day footage well enough to save a call to VFX

i used "beauty" in this case

So I spend some time into it and I learned a way to clone things with Casey Faris video:



Note: this guy has some great tutorials about Davinci Resolve, check out his channel.

I did inside Fusion Tab almost exactly like he teaches, but instead of using the paint node I used the Dead Pixel Fixer node, I just thought it was easier and quicker this way.

And... It worked! Worked like a charm!

I looked at the shot, and I think she still needs some forehead smoothing and de-shine work. I have kind of a half-moon-shaped soft power window I use with a qualifier, and I'll track that onto foreheads and use the beauty adjustments or some careful qualifying and LGG adjustments (with minus-midtone) for reasonable results. Sometimes, Y-only SNR can smooth skin just enough to make it look good but not too "plasticy."

I just finished a 10-hour documentary where a lot of it boiled down to beauty fixes (men and women), and I wound up having to use about a dozen different things for different kinds of problems, including pimples and beauty marks. Sometimes, cloning with a tracked Patch Replacer worked pretty well. Face Refinement can work under ideal circumstances, but I ran into numerous situations where it "broke." I haven't used it enough in 17 yet to say whether these flaws still exist.

I'm sure their advice are great, but I cold not make it work because I am new to Davinci Resolve and Video editing. For you to have an idea I never installed a third party plugin yet, I only use the Davinci Resolve Studio 16 and 17 so far. This is how newbie I am...

In regard the shot I'm having trouble to bring down the highlights so I can de-shine her face, the original footage is overexposed, and it is in S-Log 2 from a mark 1 Sony a7s. This was the best I could do with my knowledge.

I will put more effort into it. If you could give me some advices I would appreciate so much. (You used some terms I don't know yet, what is "LGG adjustments" and "Y-only SNR"?)

Well, if even S-log from a Sony is overexposed, you can't do much. There is no hidden detail left in that 8 meagre bit recording.
Just pulling it down will only make a highlight grey. Try to colorise close to skintone with a luma mask.

My advice on those Sonys: never use S-log in 8 bit if the scene doesn't really demand it, rather try Cine4. Never overexpose anything on faces or actors in general (other than small reflective highlights on jewellery or other accessories). Try to get as close to the final look in camera as you can, the massive compression and limited bit depth are unforgiving in post.

Maybe time for some basic training? The free stuff from BM is pretty good.

Yeah, the problem with the S-LOG 2 in the Sony a7s is the minimal ISO is locked at 3200, this is just too high... I was using a ND Filter with aperture around 17-18, I believe I should have sacrificed the shutter speed, I was at 1/125 at 60fps, but I didn't.

This is my first camera and I am still learning everything about it... I only film in S-LOG because I want to color grade, and God damn it this footage is good practice material... It is hard to color crap footage. When I'm working with 4k or 6k BRAW everything is just a breeze.

Just avoid S-log at all costs. Try Cine4, it even has some tolerance for overexposure in the Superwhite.
Log without deeper bits is useless for grading, it's just a marketing gimmick.
