Source Video isnt loaded by Double Clicking

PostWed Mar 17, 2021 7:10 am

Hi, I m new to Da Vinci Resolve (16). If I double click the video clip in the timeline, it loads the relevant timeline video in the Source Viewer, not the original Source video itself, I gotta manually load that source video from the media pool.

That shouldn't happen, else you have defined a subclip.

That behavior is correct. Coming form the timeline, you get that Clip Instance in the Viewer.

If you want the original clip, you have to come from the Media Pool.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

bro Source View is meant for Source video, Timeline View is meant for Timeline video, doesnt matter wherever u click, source video shud always load the source video (original). Thats what used to happen until something happened, now it is working weirdly.

A subclip will be limited by it's definition. But you can extend it by right-clicking and choosing edit subclip.

But if you have only defined in and out for a clip, the full length should come up in the viewer with the part in use marked. It does that here, Jim.

What can I tell you? What you're seeing is just the way it works.

Something to be aware of is that you can load a Clip Instance into the Source Viewer and when you change In/Out points there, those change will be reflected back in the timeline.

In single viewer mode it definitely matters where you click. You're expecting the Source viewer to remain selected even if one clicks within the Timeline? No thanks brah. Use dual viewer mode (gang) or use Q to switch between TL and Source view.

Good Luck

Yes, that is the correct operation. Opening a clip from the Timeline enables you to alter is In and Out points in situ. To add a new clip to the Timeline you would either drag it from the Media Pool, or double click on it to open it in the Source viewer, add I/O points, and then add it to the Timeline.
Pic shows the current playhead position in the Timeline viewer, and the double clicked Timeline clip in the Source viewer with the used section I/O points.
In this case the clip in the Source viewer is shown at its original resolution, whereas the Timeline viewer is showing the Timeline resolution, which is why they are at different aspect ratios.
As Howard says, if you either have Single viewer enabled, or because of lack of screen space only one is showing, you can switch between viewers using the Q key on your keyboard.

Yep, that's the full detail.

May I add that IMHO you should always define subclips if you need more than one part of a longer source clip?
This makes things clear and tidy and you avoid havoc in case you want to use Media Management later.

Resolve is different, try to forget habits and expectations coming from another NLE. It's not bug free (how can it be with such a complexity?), but the basic principles are pretty well organised. So, it makes a big difference from which area you are opening a clip into the source window.

THANK U VERY MUCH ALL FOR THE KIND REPLY. Now, I know even if the source viewer is loaded with timeline video (with selected portion) upon clicking, I can still use/change a new IN/OUT from it.
