Relinking Media – Groundhog Day Over and Over Again

PostWed Mar 17, 2021 6:20 pm

Ok, so I work with an iMac and DaVinci Resolve. I have my media files on a QNAP with Raid 5 connected with Thunderbolt 3. Every single time the iMac reboots or wakes from sleep, I have to relink the media files. When I do that a duplicate QNAP volume is created on the desktop. Having to relink files each time I start working has become a daily time suck. What is going on here? Do I need to put the DaVinci project file in the same volume on the QNAP NAS? (I was a Premiere user until I started working with an editor who uses DaVinci, and Premiere has such a better relinking function. Often I point DaVinci to the exact folder and it cannot do auto relinking.) Any other assistance would be highly appreciated as I am ready to :o scream!

Is your qnap not automatically connecting upon reboot?
Is the qnap listed under your preferences/drives section in resolve?

I use 3 qnaps (10 g not tb), connected to 2 windows and 2 imacs and don't have the problems you are seeing. Might be the difference between network attached and direct attach, but I've certainly used portable drives before.

At the very least you should be able to select the bins with your footage and change the source drive in 1 big swoop no?

My opinion (if I understand your question): there's enough going on with Resolve that our policy is to never sleep the computer with Resolve running.

It's fine if you Exit Resolve, then sleep the computer, then come back to it, wake the computer, let the drives come up, and then relaunch Resolve and open up your session. Everything should be as it was.

We have the same policy for quite a bit of software. The moment it loses that database link to a drive when it goes to sleep, data can get corrupted and all kinds of nastiness can happen.

If I have to walk away from the computer for a few minutes, I push the mouse to a corner so the screen saver kicks in. If I have to leave for a few hours, I shut down the computer.
