Conform Image Sequences

PostThu Mar 18, 2021 3:45 am

RE: Image sequences, Resolve 16 & 17 on both OS X 10.15.x and Windows 10

Having trouble conforming using image sequences. It just never finds the media.

Hello,
Here is my workflow:
1. Shoot footage with digital camera that records DNG.
2. convert to EXR's
3. Create Avid DNxHD media for Media composer editing from the EXR sequences
4. After edit, export EDL (CMX3600)

In Resolve I'd like to import the EDL and conform back to the EXR sequences.
When I bring the EXR sequences into Resolve they do show up as clips (not individual frames). Which is good.
However, the issue I am running into is Resolve is renaming the image sequences such that the frames become part of the clip name. Ex. Original name is 0200.0030.Fin_v1 but Resolve changes the name to 0200.0030.Fin._v1.[0000-0134].exr. I thought at first the brackets were there simply to show the frame range like in any other image sequence friendly tool (like Nuke). But if I go to clip properties the actual name now includes the [0000-0134].exr. Now the names do not match the EDL clip names. I tried creating new Reel Names using the clip names but these ended up including the brackets and extension as well. I've also renamed the clips hoping that would allow a match to the edl but that didn't work either.

As a test, I created a new sequence in Resolve using the EXR sequences and exported an EDL. The clip names in the exported EDL now also include the bracketed frame numbers and extension. This can't be on purpose unless the folks at Blackmagic Design have never used image sequences before which I am sure is not the case.

So, how does one conform using image sequences? I have tried everything over the course of several weeks now. I've read everything I can find on the issue including reading everything in the manual.

I've tried every option in Project Settings->General Options->Conform Options. Using timecode Embedded in the source clip and also From the source clip frame count. I've tried using reel names with every available option. And every other combo in that setting window. Tomorrow I will try writing a python script that will add the brackets and extension to every clip name in the EDL to see if that helps.

Here is a sample of the EDL I'm using. Perhaps it's not formatted correctly?
TITLE: EDL_test_02_split_shots
FCM: NON-DROP FRAME
001 20201009 V C 00:00:01:02 00:00:01:16 01:00:00:00 01:00:00:14
* FROM CLIP NAME: 1000_UND2.0242.AN01.BEAUTY_V01
002 20201009 V C 00:00:03:05 00:00:04:05 01:00:00:14 01:00:01:14
* FROM CLIP NAME: 1000_UND2.0242.AN01.BEAUTY_V01
003 20201009 V C 00:00:04:19 00:00:04:23 01:00:01:14 01:00:01:18
* FROM CLIP NAME: 1000_UND2.0242.AN01.BEAUTY_V01

We don't use Reel Names in our pipeline but I could certainly add them where needed.

Thanks for any ideas of where I can start looking to resolve this issue.

Ok. Just to follow up on my post.

I created a python scripts that read the EDL and then grabs the frame in and out from the image sequences. I've changed the EDL from

001 20201009 V C 00:00:01:02 00:00:01:16 01:00:00:00 01:00:00:14
* FROM CLIP NAME: 1000_UND2.0242.AN01.BEAUTY_V01

to

001 1000_UND2.0242.AN01.BEAUTY_V01.[0000-0123] V C 00:00:01:02 00:00:01:16 01:00:00:00 01:00:00:14
* FROM CLIP NAME: 1000_UND2.0242.AN01.BEAUTY_V01.[0000-0123].exr

Now that I have added the [0000-xxxx] to the reel name and the clip name Resolve works as expected. It finds the media in the media pool and cuts the shots in correctly.

So I believe Resolve automatically adding the frame numbers and extension [0000-xxxx].ext to the clipnames is the wrong thing to be doing. It should recognize that the clip is an image sequence (which it does) and then keep the original clipname without adding the frames ranges and extensions. If they did this then an imported EDL clip should match what's in the media pool.

Question I have is am I doing something completely wrong in importing edl's and media? Certainly others must be using hi Rez image sequences too with EDLs. I have a working solution but spent half a day writing a script to do so. At least from now on it'll be fast now that the tool exists. The tool also changes the source in and out frames to hour zero if it's not already. The EDL's I'm getting from edit all start at hour one and that's another place where Resolve can't find media as it needs them to be at hour zero for image sequences (which makes sense).

Thanks.
