Need help with matching frame size with 4k footage

PostThu Mar 18, 2021 8:25 pm

I have a full movie on my timeline and recently did a reshoot, and while adding the new reshoot clips I am having some scaling issues. My original footage settings are as follows:

Resolution 2048x858
Frame Rate 23.976
Pixel Aspect Ratio Square
Codec Apple Pro Res 4444 XQ

My reshoot clip settings are:

Resolution 4480x3096
Frame Rate 23.976
Pixel Aspect Ratio Square
Codec Apple Pro Res 4444

When I import my new footage to the timeline it is square. I read tutorials to change the Pixel Aspect Ratio to
Cinemascope, but my other footage on the timeline is set to square and when I changed it to cinemascope it still doesn't match the sizing of my other clips, it is thinner.

Also my source clips from the first shoot are .mov files and my reshoot clips are mxf files, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks for any help on this.

Your original aspect ratio is 2048x858, so around 2.39.
Your reshoot needs to be manually matched as I don't think any of aspect presets will work.
Set square aspect for your reshoot clip, then you have to distort it ( select clip then Inspector/Transform, zoom) by:
(4480/3096) / (2048/858) = 0.60622

If your x axis is at original 1.0 then y needs to be set to 0.60622 (make sure axis are unlinked- link button is grey before you type 0.60622).
At the end this will give your original aspect (2.39) for new reshoot clip.

Hey Andrew I tried what you said and it didn't work, its a small square image and I can only set it to 0.606. Am I doing something wrong?

If your x axis is at original 1.0 then y needs to be set to 0.60622 (make sure axis are unlinked- link button is grey before you type 0.60622).

In clip attributes it is set to square. Anything else I should do in the clip attributes?

It's looking squeezed to me, so square might be wrong.

Yea it is squeezed, it stretches when I put it to Cinemascope, but whats strange is that my original footage is set to square and is a different size than the other footage in cinemascope. Can I change the new footage to cinemascope and zoom in to match the frame size of my other footage without creating any issues?

It looks like the original was shot flat (not anamorphic) but that the reshoot was squeezed(?). In any event, you didn't follow the instructions. You left the link on, so both x and y went to .6 I don't know whether the original instruction will work or not, but it's at least worth trying.

You scaled both dimensions. Press unlink button ( icon next to Y letter) so it’s grey then type value in y axis.

the timeline is 2.39:1 aspect ratio 2048x858 squared pixel. that is your canvas.

now, you have a couple of things to do in order to fit your image to that canvas.

1) identify if you actually shoot with any sort of anamorphic lens. This is a given because if you did you need to de-squeeze the shot with the right aspect. Common anamorphic squeezes are 2:1 or 1.33:1.

2) after you make the image de-squeezed, you need it fit it into the canvas you have, filling left/right and cut the extra top bottom.

so, there are many ways to go about this i will try to explain one.

you need to find the correct anamorphic ration from your camera department (it looks anamorphic), or you can guess, but it is not advised.

in the project setting, usually you nave a fit/crop setting that helps you to handle mismatch geometry in the current timeline, but i will not recommend to tinker with that because you might break other geometries that you might already have placed there.
I prefer to work at the shot level.

place the shot as is in the timeline
edit page, select and open the inspector
tab retime and scaling
scaling choice :: crop. this will make the horizontal of your image fill the left/right screen
inspector, transform
unlock the zoom X/Y (tick on the chain)
now you need to put the de-squeeze factor

if you have 2:1, the Y zoom need to be 1/2=0.5
if you have 1.33:1, the Y zoom need to be 1/1.3333 = 0.75

and you should be good to go.

Native aspect for this source is 1.47, so neither 2 nor 1.33 anamorphic aspect give something standard.

If you know your other source is correct then matching to it is easy way to solve it. Otherwise you would need info from shoot what exactly was the squeeze as otherwise you have no idea what is the correct aspect (you can only estimate by looking at known shapes etc., but have no exact value).

Update Ok, so I realized my timeline resolution was set to 1920 X 1080 HD and not scope 2;39 like the film was shot in.
Below is a screen grab with principal photography on the left and the reshoot on the right. When I set the timeline to scope 2:39, it made my original clips full screen. What is confusing is that all of my principal photography clips have a square pixel aspect ratio, but the reshoot footage on the right desqueezes properly with cinemascope, but is square in the square setting. When I tried using cinemascope on the principal photography clips it distorted them.

My question now is it ok to have clips with square aspect ratio mixed with clips set to cinemascope in the same timeline? I don't want to have any issues with delivery or color. My thinking is, if its ok to have both aspect ratio settings, I can just crop in on the reshoot footage to match my other.

At the end this will give your original aspect (2.39) for new reshoot clip.

I set the image to 0.60622 and below is how it looks. It seems to stretch properly in cinemascope as apposed to square, but haven't got an answer back yet if its ok to have some clips set to square and some cinemascope on the same timeline

Aspect is per source clip so in 1 timeline you can have 10 different aspects assigned to different source clips if needed.

So reshoot looks fine with cinemascope aspect, just doesn't fill whole frame in 2048x858 project ? Maybe originally it was re-framed.
First you have to get final proper aspect for your reshoot clip- this is a must. I take that cinemascope aspect solves it (contrary to what you said in 1st post).
Then solve framing issue by zooming, re-positioning clip to match original one. Then you also will be able to tell if aspect is correct.
