Timeline question

I understand you can set the timeline to whatever resolution you want, ok. For example editing 6k BMRAW files it's not practical to have the timeline in 6K unless you're using a CRAY computer.

So we set the timeline to 1080p and all is well. However does this mean that I cannot now render the final edit in anything higher than 1080p? If so what is the point of 6k?

OR should I set the timeline to 6k and just edit using proxy/optimised media?

Some clarity would be greatly appreciated here

One could set the timeline to a lower resolution when working and then set the timeline to the needed resolution when delivering. For example one could work better in a 1080p timeline and when it's done switch to UHD and render out.

I would only keep the timeline in 4K and higher If I had the way to monitor and work with the footage in realtime.

Set the timeline to 1080p while working, then set it to 4K (or whatever, the point of a 6K Bayer pattern sensor is to create pristine 4K) when you deliver or when you need to judge sharpness.

What you shouldn't do is keep the timeline 1080p and force the render to something higher without changing the timeline resolution, then Resolve will scale up from the 1080p timeline. Thankfully they have added a warning in recent versions if you do this.

My practice is to set the timeline to the highest quality specs I will need for delivery. If playback isn't fluid, there are other ways to handle that.

Thanks for your inputs. Have experimented a bit with this and found a very satisfactory result for 6k material by...

1 - setting the timeline to 1080p (or whatever your monitor can take)
2 - creating low res proxy files for editing

can warmly recommend this solution as the proxy files really dont take up much disk space and can easily be moved/transported to another PC/MAC as needed. Also editing is finally as smooth as you want and doesn't interfere with the creative process

Hope BMD put some effort into explaining the diff between optimised media and proxy files and suggesting different workflows for them
