Resolve 17.1 Won't Start

I was able to use version 17.0 without problems but 17.1 hangs looking for control surface. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, removed all non essential USB devices, updated graphics drivers and tried win 8 compatibility. No luck. Here is my log file:

@Tom: Please send a Windows System Information .NFO file.
@Everyone else:

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

Is a folder with the .exr and .fbx files of a 3d scene (taken from an online tutorial exercise)
I named the path "tutorial" (macintoshHD/users/manosgasteratos/downloads/Exercises - CH9 3D and Multipass Compositing/3D Scene/)

I think the mess begun when I enabled reverse mapping of non-user paths

@Manos:

If you are using a Resolve Studio activation key, make sure to de-activate the license first, if you can (In the Resolve Help menu). You'll need to reinstall that. Make sure you have the activation code available. If you are using a dongle, then this would not apply.

If you are using an activation key, and you can't de-activate it, not the end of the world. Just be sure you have the activation key available to re-enter, after reinstalling Resolve.

Start by uninstalling Resolve, with the Uninstall selection in the DaVinci Resolve folder in the Mac Applications folder.

Next, in Finder, rename the /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve folder to DaVinci Resolve.bad

Then rename the /Library/Preferences/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve folder to DaVinci Resolve.bad
Note: It's possible you won't have this folder. If not, just ignore.

Then rename the /Users/manosgasteratos/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve folder to DaVinci Resolve.bad

Then rename the /Users/manosgasteratos/Library/Preferences/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve folder to DaVinci Resolve.bad

Note that the /Users/manosgasteratos/Library folder is a hidden folder.

You won't see it in Finder unless you modify Finder to show hidden files/folders. This is what I would recommend as the easy way to do this. You can get the details with a Google search.

If you don't want to modify Finder to show hidden files/folders, you can use the Finder Go menu, Go to Folder menu, then enter /Users/manosgasteratos/Library and I think you'll then see all the folders in that folder.

After all the folder renaming above, install Resolve again.

After you've run the installer, launch Resolve and the onboarding video will run, then the Quick Setup option, which you should do, then hopefully Resolve runs again.

Assuming that works, to get your project data back where you can see it, in the:

/Users/manosgasteratos/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Resolve Disk Database/Resolve Projects/Users folder, rename the guest folder to guest.orig

Then in this folder:

/Users/manosgasteratos/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve.bad/Resolve Disk Database/Resolve Projects/Users, copy the guest folder, and paste it into the:

/Users/manosgasteratos/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Resolve Disk Database/Resolve Projects/Users folder.

Now when you launch Resolve, you should see all your projects.

Yes it worked!! Thank you very much Dwaine. (luckily I had the activation code)
The only thing is, in order to retrieve my projects, I had to remove "guest.orig" folder from "Users" folder after I copied the proper "guest".

P.s. Also noticed during my attempts to solve the issue that the free resolve version from App Store works but it restored a year old project database I had. It seems that creates different folders for backups, cache and database. I hope there won't be any conflict between these two versions in the future.

Thanks again!!

Yes, the app store version stores things in totally different locations. In fact, the free and Studio App store versions store things in different locations from each other.

This is not going to change.

Hi Dwaine,

I hope this finds you well. Here's my situation.

Fresh install if Davinci Resolve 17.1.1 on Win 10 machine.
When I try to launch it, I get the "searching for control surface" splash screen and it either
a) disappears, without starting the program when Windows firewall is on
OR
b) Freezes on the same screen when Win Firewall is off.

I went through all the steps on Scott Fichter's excellent YouTube tutorial, but to no avail.

I followed the steps to generate a LOG file which can be found here and reached out as per Scotts instructions.
dropbox (dot) com /s/mrs2yqm74c8ty6g/DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20210409_140100.zip?dl=0

Hopefully you can help.

Cheers,

Jonathan

Hello all...

I had the "won't start" issue with version 16 and 17, and I seem to have fixed it after trying some suggestions. I also had problems with resolve working at less than 50% speed in editing and rendering -- and only if I ran Resolve in Windows 8 compatibility mode.

I'd just like to reiterate what I did which seems to have me back to normal on version 16, anyway.

The culprit seemed to be a cloud HDD drive (My IPTIME NAS system). Someone suggested that removing cloud drives from the machine might help, and that seems to have done it for me. I'll just have to remember to turn the cloud drives off whenever I use Resolve. I'm now rendering at 155 to 190fps on version 16 again, which is great.

@Jonathan: You have a very old NVIDIA driver installed, that does not support Resolve 17.

Go to the NVIDIA Driver Download site and download and install the current driver for your GTX 980M.

When you run the driver installer, select the Custom install option, then select the Clean install option.

In addition to the Resolve log file, we also need a Windows System Information .NFO file.

Open the System Information app and select File - Save to generate the .NFO file.

Hi,

First poster here and since i have quite a similar issue i will migh as well share it here instead of opening a new thread.

I have been succesfully using DR 15, 16 and now 17 with no issues except my hardware limitations, not the best laptop for this, anyway; it works. I installed the fusion reactor .lua and trouble started when i changed the pathways as it is on the installation guide. DR froze, i hat to purge it and since then I'm stuck on "searching for control surface" before collapsing. This step:

This means you should re-create the Fusion Studio style PathMap settings like this on each of your render nodes:

Image

From:

Reactor:

To:

C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\Fusion\Reactor\

If you have moved Reactor to a new installation location on your network share you would change the "To" section entry to point to that custom location you have placed the files at. This would be the folder you have set in your "REACTOR_INSTALL_PATHMAP" environment variable.

Defaults PathMap Entry

From:

UserPaths:

To:

UserData:;AllData:;Fusion:;Reactor:Deploy

The UserPaths: section is where you define the folders that hold your fusion user preferences. Each PathMap location you define here will have a full set of sub-folders created during Fusion or Fusion Render Node's startup for holding the custom addons you can use with Fusion like:

Uninstalled and re-installed a dozen of times, several 16 versions and 17 versions and nothing seems to work.

- Drivers are updated
- I try CaptureLogs and it says a .zip file is created on the desktop, but nothing ever comes out of it.

Like the Manos issue above, I don't know what messing with those paths has changed. And my only suggestion to recover is to do a clean Resolve install.

To do a clean Resolve install (Note to anyone else: the steps below are tailored to Ivan's specific system):

Uninstall Resolve using the Windows Control Panel - Programs and Features.

In the Programs and Features panel, right click DaVinci Resolve and select Uninstall.

Also uninstall any other Resolve related apps, such as Resolve Keyboard, Resolve Panels and Fairlight apps.

Don't uninstall PostgreSQL 9.5, if it's installed.

After Uninstalling Resolve, in File Explorer, check that the C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve folder has been removed. If the DaVinci Resolve folder still exists, delete it.

For the next steps, you need to make sure you can see hidden files/folders in File Explorer.

In the Cortana search window, type: file explorer options, and then open the File Explorer Options window.

In the File Explorer Options window, select the View tab and In the Hidden files and folders area, select:

"Show hidden files, folders and drives".

Also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

In File Explorer, go to folder C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design

Rename the DaVinci Resolve folder to DaVinci Resolve.bak

In File Explorer, go to folder C:\Users\gerni\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design

Rename the DaVinci Resolve folder to DaVinci Resolve.bak

Now reinstall Resolve.

Launch Resolve. What you should see is the onboarding video. Watch or skip that and do the Quick Setup.

If Resolve is now working, we can copy your projects back. Exit Resolve.

In File Explorer, go to this folder:

C\Users\gerni\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support

Delete the Resolve Disk Database folder.

Copy the C\Users\gerni\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve.bak\Support\Resolve Disk Database folder to:

C\Users\gerni\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support

Now start Resolve, and you should see all your projects.

Good luck.

Hello
Since the beginning of version 17, I can't start resolve, so after releasing 17.2, I decided to ask here. The latest working for me version is 16.2.8.
I tried many fixes shown on YouTube, like Windows version compatibility, upgrading drivers, etc, but the result is always the same: Davinci does not show up after displaying the initian image. It always remains in the task manager and hangs up there.

Could you please check what is going on?
Here is my log: kk.bg.tempcloudsite.com/DaVinci-Resolve-logs-_205452,65.zip
I use laptop Lenovo Y700-15ISK, Windows 8.1

Kind regards
Alex

We don't support Windows 8.1.

But your immediate problem is that your NVIDIA 376.54 driver is much to old.

Update the NVIDIA driver to the current 466.47 driver for that GPU and see if that helps.

OK, solved! Thank you for your tip. Unfortunately I could not update the Nvidia driver, because the current Nvidia software only works on Win 7 and 10. All the methods of upgrading failed for me.
So, what I did?
My laptop Lenovo Y700-15ISK has two GPUs:
- Intel HD Graphics 530
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
I noticed that when I switched off the Nvidia device, Resolve properly started.
Then, I switched on the Nvidia device again, and this time Resolve also started properly, but on the list of "GPU Configuration", the graphics cards now are listed in the different order:
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
- Intel HD Graphics 530
... and when they are in this order, everything works OK. Thank you.

If you don't update the Nvidia driver, and you use a Resolve version higher than 16.2.6, and you tell Resolve to use the Nvidia GPU for processing, it won't be able to run in the desired CUDA mode and will be forced to run in OpenCL mode. This has terrible Resolve performance, and will likely cause other issues.

But if you are happy with the way things are working, then OK.

Hello, when I install da vinci resolve studio 17.4.3, it does not start, the "video plugins" banner remains and the program closes after a short while. I have tried various solutions that I have found on the web but nothing.

I am attaching a download link by Wetransfer of the files that Scott Fichter mentions in his YouTube video.

I hope you can help me, greetings and thanks.

@Samuel: You appear to have an older AMD graphics driver installed. Please try updating that to see if it helps.

If updating the AMD driver doesn't help, send another Resolve log and NFO file after updating the driver.

@Javier: It appears that this Red Giant plugin is causing the crash:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins\Red Giant Universe\Universe_Utilities_Logo_Motion_OFX.ofx.bundle\Contents\win64\Universe_Utilities_Logo_Motion_OFX.ofx because Error en una rutina de inicialización de biblioteca de vínculos dinámicos (DLL).

As a quick fix to get Resolve going, you could rename the C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX folder to C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX.tmp

That should prevent Resolve from loading any 3rd party OFX plugins.

You could also rename the crashing plugin, so it doesn't attempt to load, and see what happens. That may solve the issue, or there may be more plugins after that one that cause issues.

To do that, rename C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins\Red Giant Universe\Universe_Utilities_Logo_Motion_OFX.ofx.bundle\Contents\win64\Universe_Utilities_Logo_Motion_OFX.ofx to C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins\Red Giant Universe\Universe_Utilities_Logo_Motion_OFX.ofx.bundle\Contents\win64\Universe_Utilities_Logo_Motion_OFX.ofx.tmp

Do you have the current version of Red Giant Universe installed?

Hi Dwaine,
Thank you very much!!! you managed to solve my problem, now Resolve finally opens.
I opted to uninstall Red Giant and reinstall it removing plugin implementation for Resolve and that's how it worked for me.
The version I have of Red Giant is 3.3, I would have liked to continue having it within Resolve if it gave me this problem. Would you know any way to make it possible?

Thank you very much for your help. :)

The current Universe package is version 5. Updating to the current version might help.

That version of universe (5.0.1) crashes Resolve immediately when I apply any of it's FX in the color tab. works in the edit tab though.
On OS X 11.6.2 (20G314) and latest Resolve and the version before.
Any idea?

Cheers

Would be worth checking with Maxon support to see what they suggest.

The link to the log file is not working. The NFO link worked.

Looking at the NFO file, you have a pretty old NVIDIA driver. Try installing a current Studio driver. When you run the driver installer, select the Custom install option, then select Clean Install.

If that doesn't help, send another NFO and another Resolve log file.

Resolve 17.4.3 Won't Start. I have installed and uninstalled several times and tried every possible fix I could find in these forums and on line. I have tried before with version 16 but never got it to work either. Was hoping I could get 17 to work.

During the install I get a green check mark on the CPU and GPU indicating that it passed the system check. During startup it goes through the startup sequence and flashes the new project screen for a fraction of a second then nothing. The program appears in the task manager as running but nothing on the screen. Here is a link to the log file and .nfo file. Please help me figure this out.

Hi all and Hi Dwaine,
also I am experiencing a problem with DaVinci Resolve 17.4 not starting on my new mini pc with Amd Ryzen 9 5900HX and integrated graphics card Radeon Vega 8. I insert below the link to Google Drive with the NFO file and with the result of CaptureLogs. I hope there is a chance to be able to use DaVinci Resolve on my PC.

Many thanks for your help.
