I've moved a project from my editing drives to a storage drive. Exported the project and re-imported it from the storage drives. The project opens fine but the clips (all subclips) will not relink! I've tried everything. This should be so easy...but its not. Somebody please help!

Subclips are just pointers! Did you render them out with Media Manage? If not, you'll need the whole source clips too.

I tried media management, I tried achieving project... nothing works. The sub-clips are simply the full clips cut down. They are all part of the full clips... I didn't delete anything. There is no source media that is separate from the subclips. I don't get it!

I've just been going through the forums and I now suppose that you cannot re-link sub-clips... and now since ALL my clips are subclips, saving the project to another external drive is nearly impossible without re-creating all the work. This is pretty crazy. I was about to upgrade to the Studio version - but now this causes me great pause. Media management in Premiere Pro just works on everything. How someone in Blackmagic thought it wasn't important to be able to relink subclips is mind boggling! I was hoping to dump Premiere for Resolve but this is a real dealbreaker.

You need to be more specific with what solutions you tried.
If the source names didn't change, you relink the subclips by selecting them (not just the clip they were generated from!) right-clicking and selecting "Relink Selected Clips". Select the folder where the source files are and it should work.
"Change Source Folder" should work as well.
You are only screwed if you renamed your source files or the extension changed. Then there's no way to relink. See
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=113727&hilit=+subclipsResolve has a ton of re-linking features, yet can't fix this tiny thing.

Well, it works like this for me:
I have a timeline with subclips. I go to Media Management and let it copy the timeline media, not forgetting to activate relinking. I export that project.
After that I have my new clips in a different folder and a new project. Import that into the database, even on another machine, and all is there. If that doesn't work for others, there might be a bug under Windows. I'm on a Mac, but since you mentioned FCP-X, I suppose you are too.
Please understand that you shouldn't approach DR with preconceived expectations from other NLEs. Every NLE is different.

Hey Uli - thanks for trying but I've done all that and it just doesn't work. I took ALL the clips from my project and turned each one into subclips...which I guess automatically breaks the connection to the original.
Then as a test... I made a small test project, keeping the original clips and made a few subclips into its own bin. Then sent that project onto another hard drive. When I opened it up, all the original clips were there but the subclips didn't even exist. This is a major problem.
By the way, my workaround... from Resolve I exported a Premiere Pro XML... opened the project in Premiere and everything was fine. That's kind of sad. Hopefully Resolve will catch up and fix this problem.
I'm looking forward to the day that can give up Premiere completely and just use Resolve for editing. It's close but no cigar. (though I will never give up After Effects!)

No, subclips don't break the connection if you stay in the project. You can even extend them by right-clicking and going to "Edit Subclip". How exactly did you "take" the clips from your project? Subclips are virtual until you render them by Media Management.
P.S. I understand your feelings about After Effects, the 3D integration with Cinema4D is excellent.
