Hey Guys,
Hoping I can get some help in deciding what to do? My old 2016 iMac died a couple days ago (using my iPad to do research) and I'm having a tough time deciding what route to go. Everyone says wait for the new m1's but I think the model I would want won't come out until earliest in the fall. So I'm stuck in this awkward position of needing a computer now to finish current work + start upcoming projects.
I do weekly youtube videos recorded with an EOS-R + Atomos ninja in 4k prores 422 and also record 2-4 hour online courses that are much longer and advanced in production also in 4k. Primarily work in Davinci (obviously lol) + Photoshop + Lightroom + Webstorm running local servers with my web environment running in Node.js and php for Wordpress (I also code in Javascript/php).
What I would like is to have a silent machine while working that is super smooth while color grading/editing. I use 7- 15 nodes in color grading usually + NR on all my videos. I would say my editing skills are Medium at best. DR would take up 99% of my old gpu & 30% cpu + my fans would be running super loud the whole time I was editing lol. Priority is editing/working experience over rendering times, but obviously the faster the render the better.
I guess my conundrum is do I splurge on the Mac Pro and just say f* it even though m1x is around the corner? I think from all the youtube reviews I've watched basically say m1x is going to be close or as powerful as the mac pro but for half the cost. Of course def not upgradable especially with built in ram and gpu now so that would be my only saving grace with the Mac Pro. If I did go the Mac Pro I was thinking the 12-core, 32gig of ram (self-upgrade to 96 via owc), get the w5700xt + afterburner card with 1tb ssd as the HD.
Or should I get an iMac 5k for half the cost of the mac pro and try to re-sell it in 8 months to recoup some of the cost? I would think it would be difficult to do that considering most people would want the newest iMac, so I would probly take a bigger loss on money. Or try the mac mini and hope I can hook all my externals up to it using a thunderbolt 3 dock...
Anyways any input would be greatly appreciated from the community if you can spare any time! Cheers!
