[solved]Resolve 17.1.1 studio: no video and gpu errors

Hello,

I am encountering an issue with the windows version of Resolve 17, 17.1 and 17.1.1 studio.

In particular the preview windows are all black, and there is no video.

After some testing I was able to better isolate the issue: it seems that the program works fine unless that some adjustments are made in the color tab. indeed, even if some minor adjustment is made on the primary wheels, the video stops working (even the scopes window is black), and a gpu error appears.

I already tried (many times) what follows, but unfortunately the problem remains.

1) I performed a clean installation of Resolve, by removing the previous versions, and by manually deleting the directories with the settings and related stuff, in the user folder.
2) I updated the gpu driver (Intel iris 6100) to the latest version.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... ows-15-40-

Unfortunately the "latest" gpu driver version is relatively old, since as you can see in the readme file it has been built on November 2020, and Resolve 17 has been released in 2021:

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/30196/eng/ReadMe64.txt

"Release Version: Planned Release
Driver Version: 20.19.15.5171
Build Date: Nov 4, 2020"

Attached you can find the screenshot of the gpu error message, the dxdiag output (with my system configuration), as well the log files of Resolve 17.1.1.
I was hoping that this latest version of Resolve could solve the problem, but this was not the case.

Finally, I would like to point out that with Resolve 16.2.8 studio or a previous version everything works as expected, but of course I cannot use the new features of Resolve 17...

My first guess here is that the Intel GPU just isn't going to cut it. You need a new nVidia card.

I doubt that the problem is related to the performances of the gpu: as I explained above everything works fine with Resolve 16.2.8. Also, I mainly work with full-hd clips...

Since there is a gpu error, my guess is that either there is a bug in Resolve, or the problem is the gpu driver. There are many topics related to similar issues, and in some cases the problem has been solved by updating the gpu driver: unfortunately I already have the latest version, so there is nothing that I can do (unless that Intel releases a new version).

You could be right, but...things changed in 17 with regard to necessary GPU specs. That's why I was thinking new card here.

I am not going to spend a lot of time researching the GPU, but this site doesn't list ANY onboard GPU memory, and that doesn't look to be a very heavyweight GPU back when it was released in 2015.

Ditto with the specs from here. Especially the low CUDA capabilities.

I already discussed the problem with the Blackmagic support, via email, and they did not mention any incompatibility or possible problem related to the gpu.

However, their only suggestion was to perform the operations that I described in 1) and 2), but unfortunately the problem remains.

The curious thing is that I had a similar issue with the first versions of Resolve 15, years ago, and it was solved after some release...

I ran into the same issue with 17.1.1 update. Clips were black, no video, no playback, basically frozen. However I was able to "Resolve" it (pun intended) by going to Project Settings, then in "Color Science" dropdown I picked a different option, and then reverted back to the original option again. That right there fixed the issue. Everything showed up right away!

I closed Resolve and re-launched it without any issues. It's been running fine since. Hope this works in your case too.

Thank you for your answer.

Unfortunately this solution does not work in my case. I decided to revert to Resolve 16.2.8 studio, which works fine.

I have also been in contact with the Blackmagic support via email, but their only suggestions were to perform 1) and 2) (see the first message), which I already did. I am quite disappointed, to be honest, since I bought the studio version of Resolve, and I cannot use the latest one...

I would guess Jim's comments are where the problem lies. That on-board "gpu chip" was weak to begin with, and is now too weak and ancient to work with R17.

Which does according to multiple reviews have much new color code involved. If not completely re-coded.

On-board graphics closets are simply not a real GPU. They're a tool to help a CPU get by without one. For general computing.

Resolve is a demanding graphics app.

I update the discussion to inform you that the problems described above has been solved with Resolve 17.2 studio.
