Skip frame jerkiness after adding cross dissolve

PostThu Apr 01, 2021 11:32 pm

I'm getting a weird jerkiness/skip frame thing happening after adding cross dissolve to my clips. To solve I select the 2nd clip, change stabilization method, click stabilize.

You can see the skip frame after this dissolve into the kitchen counter. You can also see the jerkiness afte dissolving into next clip in bathroom. See here:

Resolve Studio 17.1.1 build 9

Thanks for any ideas on how to prevent the skip frame from happening. Or a way to solve on all clips quickly.

Your video is listed as Private so cannot view it.
I've seen this before. Two things to try. In the Playback dropdown menu set the Timeline Proxy Mode to Half Resolution. Or try selecting Show All Video Frames. This may affect your audio playback.
You may have something hogging resources.
What is the source of your video clips?

I've updated the clip so it isn't private... As you can see the exported segment has the issue; so it isn't an issue with playback resolutions or resources. Thanks for any other suggestions.

I'm wondering if the two clips have enough overlap for the cross dissolve? If the clips don't enough frames on the trimmed ends DR may try to repeat frames to compensate (although I haven't tested this repeated frame thing, I do know it needs the overlap).

I don't see any skips.

Sorry for the late reply... not so much "skips" ... just "jerkiness" as the dissolve happens. If you watch each dissolve a few times you can see it.

Sorry, I can't see it either, but I can see the effect of shooting at 24fps.

I only see the skipped frame about 0.5 second _after_ the dissolve to the kitchen is finished.

Are you sure your project framerate matches the clip's framerate? If you remove the dissolve - does the jerkyness really go away?

It happens because the handles of the video are unstabilized. You have to re-stabilize your clips once you add a cross dissolve. If the stabilize button is greyed out, just change one of the paramaters and then click to stabilize again

I think it would be a good feature if Resolve would ask you if you want to restabilize the clip after adding a dissolve that is ruining the stabilization. Or the option to auto stabilize if a dissolve is added to a stabilized clip. Or I guess I can get in the habit of stabilizing after dissolves added.

Thanks for everyone's input.

This is one of those things colorists have to figure out, once they have years of experience.
