Don't import AVI files?

PostSat Apr 03, 2021 3:31 pm

PowerDirector, Magix Video Delux, Movavi, Wondershare etc. all have no problem to import AVi files - DaVinci Resolve already?

Resolve supports only few codecs in AVI (uncompressed, DV, Photo-JPEG on Mac, Cineform, GrassValley codecs) as it doesn't use OS provided codecs.

Can you install the missing codes afterwards?

No. Resolve doesn’t use OS provided codecs only internal ones.

AVI is not very good format for post. It's old and simple. Misses to many key points- timecode, aspect , field order info etc. Don't count Resolve will ever have better support for it.

I don't want to contradict you in any way - but I have a trail camera that is created in AVI with FullHD files and it is very time consuming to first bring the files into a format accepted by DaVinci in order to be able to edit them ... It would be nice if this would have been feasible in one wash.

Yep, but this is how things are. Convert or use other NLE.

convert AVI Type 1 to Type 2
(videohelp.com/software/DV-Type-1-to-DV-Type-2-Converter)
Win10, Ryzen7 2700x, RX5600x
Resolve Studio 18 Beta

It won't do anything in case of Resolve.

If you have many DV AVI files then you can open them in QT7 Pro and save a reference file. Then this reference MOV file will load into Resolve (DV in MOV is supported). You need QT 7 Pro license though.

Other way is conversion, but to avoid re-compression just re-wrap AVI to MOV with ffmpeg:

ffmpeg -i source_dv.avi -c copy output_dv.mov

(or use any of the free GUIs for ffmpeg which have re-wrapping preset).

Like Shutter Encoder.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I literally created an account just to reply to this 2 year old post and thank you personally lol. I used ffmpeg exactly as you suggested and problem solved! You're still helping strangers in 2023 :)

Thank you to those who mentioned ffmpeg and shutter encoder (ffmpeg gui). I have a trail cam that I want to pull footage from and this made it much easier.
