Resolve 17.1.1 and Canon Raw from EOS R5

PostTue Apr 06, 2021 5:47 pm

I'm in the process of evaluating cameras with the intention of making a new purchase. I've been downloading sample footage from these cameras and using Resolve to edit it and generate output to evaluate on my studio monitor. One of the cameras I've been looking at is the Canon EOS R5.

I've downloaded several 8K Canon Raw files created on an R5 and am having lots of issues editing and outputting these in Resolve. Some of the issues I see are hangs when generating optimized media, more hangs when rendering output, etc. In general, things seem very sluggish. I have the timeline resolution set to 1920x1080, optimized media format DNxHR HQX, and have the render cache set to Smart.

Is there a known issue with Resolve and Canon 8K raw files? Perhaps I need to set something in Resolve to optimize for the 8K raw files? I normally edit 4K Slog footage from my Sony A6500 and don't have any of the problems described above.

System Configuration:
DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.1.1 Build 9
Windows 10 Pro build 19042 (64-bit)
AMD 32-core Threadripper CPU
128 GB RAM
Various nVME SSD and 7200 RPM hard drives
Nvidia RTX-3080 GPU
Nvidia Studio Driver version 461.92

I've only worked with R5 footage once, but it was pretty sluggish on my fairly beefy (dual GPU) Hackintosh. Based on the scuttlebutt I've heard, the codec is notoriously heavy no matter the NLE or workstation. I used optimized media as a work-around. Less than ideal, but not as much of a PITA as proxies.

EDIT: Well, for kicks I loaded-up that project in 17.1.1 and I can actually play back a single 8K R5 .CRM file at solid 24fps on a 4K timeline. I then added a LUT, primary curves, OFX glow and a power window with more curve adjustments and it still played back at 24fps. Not until I added 2 frames of temporal noise reduction does it dip below24fps.

For what it's worth, my system is MacOS, i9, 128GB RAM and 2 Radeon Vega Frontier Editions. Footage is on a RAID of 7200rpm drives.

That doesn't work for me. Any attempt to generate optimized media hangs or throws an error.

Ugh. Well, based on my test last night your hardware should be up to snuff. Something else is going on. The usual culprit on Windows seems to be drivers.

Agreed. I'm running the latest Nvidia Studio drivers for my GPU--perhaps I need to downgrade the version to one that's more stable? Anyone have a recommendation for a version known to work well with Resolve 17.1.1?

Any driver except 461.09 should work fine.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
