Media Offline in Color, but not Edit?

V17 Studio, Windows 10.

I have a timeline. I let DR render cache, all blue, go to Deliver, found that h.265 crashes DR, tried several different methods, all h.265 crashes DR. Ended up with h.264. Went back to timeline and most clips show media offline. Delete entire Render Cache, let DR re-render entire timeline until all is blue again. All clips show, no Media Offline. Over in Color page, about half of the clips still show Media Offline. But I select a clip, and it shows and plays fine in the viewer.

I truly don't get it. I really don't. I would ask for help, but I don't even know where to begin.

It should work, but be aware that H.265 requires a lot of system resources. (There are some H.265 intra-frame variants that actually work pretty well, but 90% of the ones out there are long-GOP 8-bit formats that don't work well for post.)

My best advice would be to transcode the H.265 to a format that's more easily-handled, like DNxHD or DHxHR, and see how that goes.

Hey Marc, I don't have any h.265. My source is h.264 and I'm trying to output to h.265 based upon Vimeo's recommendations for uploads. DR chooses the NVIDIA encoder when I select h.265 in Deliver, and my RTX2080 should be able to handle it, I would think. Maybe I'm not choosing the right set of options. I'll play around with it. I was just wondering if anyone has been able to get it to work, and if so, perhaps sharing their settings.

I did optimize my source h.264 drone footage to DNxHR SQ for the timeline and it works well for real time playback of 4K (without heavy color or fusion). Cheers.

Here are the export settings I use successfully with an 8 GB GTX 1070.

So, Jim, those settings actually worked. It took about 4-5 minutes LESS time to do h.265 than the h.264 for the 8 1/2 minute 4K file, and was 36% smaller than the h.264. I don't have HD source footage, so those settings didn't apply (or appear), but I matched all the other ones. I'm going to go through and start turning them off, or changing some to see if I can determine which settings make DR crash. I also tried both MP4 and MOV. Thanks for sharing you settings.

Jim, I toggled every single setting from your set independently and each rendered without a problem. However, I did find the following set of parameters consistently crash DR on my machine. You might try these to see if you see similar results. If I use the Vimeo preset in DR, which defaults to h.264 and doesn't let you change the Quality or other settings, but change it to H.265, it does render OK. So it must be something in my settings it doesn't like.

I found that changing the single setting for Data Levels from Full to Auto avoids the crash. I don't understand it, but now I know. It sure would be nice to be able to specify that, otherwise, Life's a Box of Chocolates...
