videos edited on macbook pro cannot be read on mac mini

PostThu Apr 08, 2021 7:57 pm

Hi there,

I am currently transferring files from my older Macbook pro to my new Mac mini.
I am having a problem because the files that were recently edited with Davinci on my macbook do not work on my mac mini. They can be read perfectly from the macbook, but when transferred on my mac mini, they do not work anymore.
What do I mean by “they do not work”?
I mean, that I will see the first image of the video being displayed, then freezing for a few seconds, then I see another image and it freezes again etc… basically I can see one image every 4 seconds or so.

The OS are the same on both computers:
Mac OS big sur 11.2.3 (20D91)

The Davinci versions are the same on both computers:
16.0.0.060

I use QuickTime to read the videos: same versions on both computers:
Version 10.5 (1086.4.2)

Something strange: the video edited with Davinci on my macbook cannot even be read by Davinci itself on the mac mini!
I get “media offline” for almost every frame except for one frame every 4 seconds roughly.

Some trials I carried out:
The video generated on the macbook can be read on a PC without any problem.

If I edit a video from mac mini and transfer it to the macbook pro (so in the reverse direction), the video will work.

Older videos edited a year ago with Davinci on the macbook seem to work fine on the mac mini

I have tried reinstalling Davinci on my macbook pro. Nothing changed.

Last I have contacted the apple support, senior advisor cannot find a solution and my question was pushed to engineering level, but they asked me to review also with the Davinci editors see if they can help.

Please find attached a screenshot of my export settings.

Any idea on what could go wrong???

Thanks for help.

Can you post a sample for download?
UHD is pretty demanding for an Intel Mac mini without an eGPU, but something else seems wrong here.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Hi Uli,

Thanks for offering your help.

Unfortunately I cannot attach a sample, it is too large and MOV extensions are not allowed...
The issue observed though is fairly simple, imagine you have a video frozen on one single image and this image changes every 4 seconds…
I sent a video sample to Apple and apparently they were also able to observe the issue.
In the process of trying to make a sample for you I noticed that the issue was still observed at lower resolution, down to 720p (the lowest I tried). So UHD is not the issue.

Oh and one important point I forgot to mention:
My mac mini is new generation with M1 processor.
It is so much faster! that is why I moved to it.

another point I observed:
the exported videos do not have the same size depending whether I edit them with mac mini or mac book pro.
If I export the video with the same settings on mac mini and macbook pro, here are the sizes I get:

original size: 184,5MB
edited on mac mini: 184,7MB (this on works on any computer)
edited on macbook pro: 234,9 MB (this one doesn’t work on mac mini but works fine on other computers)

This problem really blocks me on my work now… any help is welcome.

Thanks!

16.0 on m1 apple? Why not install a native app like 17.1?
Problem could born from emulation of intel processor to run Resolve 16.
Try to install r17 native m1 and verify

Hi carlomacchiavello,

Indeed I intend to update at some point, but first I want to ensure a proper transfer between computers.

In fact whether I have davinci 16 or 17 on my mac mini won't change much because the problem appears when the files are edited on my macbook pro which is intel...
On the mac mini I only try to 'read' the files. I use quicktime for that and it does not work.
On top of it, indeed, I have also noticed that when trying to read the file with davinci 16 from the mac mini it doesn't work. But the fact that I use davinci 16 and not 17 does not change the fact that quicktime still can't read it...

Regards.

Probably it does matter! You are using a software in the Rosetta emulation that nobody seriously tested on such a machine, since they developed a native version for 17 already. Hardware decoding has completely changed in the M1 machines, they can handle some formats nobody else does yet (only announced for next Intel).
You can put a test sample for us on any cloud service likeDropbox, WeTransfer or the like and post the link here. If you are not allowed to include an URL, just put single space in it.

Dude, that works!
well, davinci 17 at least can read it, so that's all I need to work.
I didn't know davinci could modify part of the environment used by other softwares.
Quicktime still cannot read those files but that's no problem. Maybe at some point I will reinstall the OS and it will be fixed, I don't know.

Thank you Uli and carlomacchiavello, your guys definitely saved my weekend! :D
