Clip in timeline deleted without knowing it.

PostSat May 01, 2021 1:12 am

Hello! I edit for a long time, building up all the clips, cutting, deleting. After a while, I go back to the beginning of the timeline only to see that a clip I trimmed and fit in somewhere would be deleted, throwing off all the audio clips' timing. It ripple deletes itself (at least it feels that way).

This is something that has happened to me dozens of times. It's frustrating because I have no idea how I'm accidentally deleting clips in my timeline.

The clip would just seemingly... vanish. I would have no idea how it got deleted, or when it got deleted. This has never happened to me on other editing programs, so I assume I must be accidentally hitting a shortcut key?

At this point, I'm scared to start any new project with DaVinci Resolve, haha. I don't want to work on a longer project and just have clips vanish as I work on it. If anyone has any idea what is goin' on, any help would be appreciated, thank you!

It does sound like Operator Error.

Have you completed any training for Resolve?

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... e/training

The Beginner's Guide and Advanced Editing will give you a pretty solid groundwork for using Resolve effectively.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I have completed multiple finished projects, but have not seen the tutorials. I will check these out just in case I'm randomly hitting the wrong key. Thanks.

It sounds like you are just learning, which to me means you must screw a few things up to learn.
You have just learned to slow down, and pay closer attention to what the affect is when you hit a button.
(congratulations)

There are two different delete keys on many keyboards. In Resolve one deletes, and the other ripple deletes. Along with that, what you had selected when you hit delete could delete video only or audio and video...there are all sorts of situations. Had you done a few more playbacks along the way, I would think you would have caught the error earlier as well, and could have hit undo a couple of times.

Like I said, slow down, and pay closer attention. If you do go to delete something, zoom out on your timeline before you hit the button, so you can understand what is happening on the timeline.

If you are moving clips around the timeline, there is no reason not to do a review playback to see how that affects the edit. Again, this should tell you pretty quickly that you did something wrong. Perhaps an insert rather than overwrite.

Its called "learning to edit" and it sounds like you are well on your way.

Blackmagic offers some great and free training on their software. As Jim suggested, it might be time to look it up.

Well, this worries me, haha. I've been editing for 8 years (other programs, many other projects). I'll check out those tutorials anyway, I suppose I must be doing something wrong.

The biggest mistake I made after switching from Premiere Pro was thinking that my previous experience meant I could just jump into a new NLE without difficulty.

Nope.

Do that Beginner's Guide at the very least. ;)

Michael

You can also try using the Edit > Undo History > Open History Window and keeping it on a separate screen. This can provide you additional feedback in terms of what happened when you deleted the clip.

Resolve retains a pretty long undo-redo history when the app is open - so do feel free to undo back and correlate what happened with the entries in this window.

I went through the training. It all felt pretty straight forward. I was already doing most of what they were teaching, but yet again, I'm working on a project and a big chunk of clips got deleted without me noticing it. I was very far into a project, being careful, but to no avail.

I have no idea how it's happening, and the undo history does not go back far enough for me to undo it. I'm baffled here. Chunks of clips just... vanish. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, here.

The undo history retains all actions for a given session.

It may be worth adding some detail on your workflow - e.g do you roundtrip or otherwise import/export timelines as EDLs/AAFs? Are there collaborators for your project? Any workflow plugins or scripts?

After a while, I go back to the beginning of the timeline only to see that a clip I trimmed and fit in somewhere would be deleted
Is there a possibility of adjacent keys (example Home <--> Delete, = <--> Backspace) being pressed by mistake? If you use the default DaVinci Resolve key configuration and turn off keyboard macros, do you encounter the same issues?

No importing/exporting. It's a very small project, length-wise, but has a lot of small cuts and layers for sound effects. Little disheartening when all that fine-tuned stuff goes missing. No plugins or scripts. I have never edited the key configuration, and I don't believe my keyboard has any macro keys on it. One of those compact ones.

I will try turning off all keyboard shortcuts, haha. Thanks for the reply. I'll continue to try and figure this out.
