Fairlight: Bounce Tracks to New Layer vs Bounce Mix to Track

PostMon May 03, 2021 2:12 am

If I understand the manual correctly (page 3265), both are supposed to include audio processing on the clips and track (e.g. levels, panning, plugins, etc).

However when I bounce Tracks to New Layer, it includes crossfades and clip-based processing, but not plugins on the track itself.

If I select Bounce Mix to Track, it includes the processing listed above plus the track based effects.

Is this by design? I wish the manual were a bit clearer on the different options here.

It also begs the question, what happens to plugins in the track when one Bounces Selected Tracks to New Layer - are they disabled (since the bounced clip is supposed to include all processing, and not bypassing them would result in the effects being applied twice), or is that up to the user? If I pop a lower layer up on top, will the processing then be enabled again as it was for that clip/layer?

Thanks,
Thor

Hey Thor,
as I understand it, when you bounce to a new layer, clip based processing and fx are rendered on to the new clip, and all clip based processing is reset to default, as it is a new clip. The original source layer is underneath, and if you pop that to the top or trim out the top layer to expose a section, all the original clip based fx and eq etc are there and still active.

The bounce mix to new track is taking it's source from a bus, which is post the individual channel inserts, so will include all of their processing.
The bounce track to a new layer is working at the clip level, which is pre the channel plugin inserts, so won't include them. I think this is by design, and makes sense because track to new layer is basically bouncing your clips (with any clip based fx) together as a new consolidated file, then they come up the same channel.

Have I made that clearer...or more confusing? Haha.

Hi Andy,

what you write makes sense, but if true should be clearer in the manual (or users should be smarter, at least some of us ;) ).

As it is that differentiation isn't clear, but I can see how that would make sense, using Bounce Selected Tracks to New Layer to consolidate a bunch of editing and adjustments to multiple clips and layers to one contiguous clip, and Bounce Mix to Track to consolidate any number of tracks to a more finished mix, including all track and bus processing.

Maybe someone should write a manual to help explain the manual.

Best,
Thor
