Can't Add Back Wipe Affect After Removal

I had an edge wipe effect at the end of one clip. I was doing some editing and put a new clip against the clip that contained the wipe (the wipe was at the end of that clip only).
Since it was removed, I cannot add the edge wipe back where it was. Is there a reason why? How do I apply the edge wipe again?
