How to avoid dull colors in final videos (Rec.709)

The 4K projects I am currently doing are a mix of graphics, animation and pre-made stock video. Exported for viewing online, no broadcast.

Rec.709 was the DV default but when I export the colors take a hit and it looks muted.

In the Project Settings and also the Render Settings I set color space to Rec.2020, export, and the color is almost the same as the timeline video colors in the DV viewer, just a tad over-saturated.

The timeline video window looks perfect, just what I want. I just want the exported video to look like that.

I've also tried setting Data Levels in the render settings to Full instead of Auto, which was recommended somewhere.

Currently I am not color grading and I don't want to launch an endless search for the perfect LUT, just want to know what settings are needed for this type of content. So my exported video looks like it looks in DV.

Suggestions? Thanks!

If you’re not monitoring in rec2020 then you shouldn’t export in it. Please do more research in how color space conversion work.

Saturation should not be a problem if you do a modicum of color "tuning". As noted above do a bit of looking through the manual.

And no, do NOT set anything to full/data/0-255.

Here is an example. In DaVinci (left) the colors are perfect, accurate. Both stock footage and imported graphics.

On the right the top image is the default H.264 export. Colors looks muted.

On the bottom right, an export after I changed Rec.709 (mode/export) to Rec.2020. Colors are oversaturated.

Looking for the right settings to avoid this shift after viewing exported video.

As you've already been advised, don't use rec. 2020 unless you can accurately monitor rec. 2020 (which you can't).

In any case, note that you can't monitor *any* color space accurately in the Resolve program window. That display is for reference only, not for assessing actual color correction. To assess actual color correction, you need an external monitor. This requires either the Studio version, or a decklink card for the free version.

And of course you need a reasonably accurate external monitor -- or one which is inaccurate in exactly the same way as your ultimate viewing monitor is inaccurate

I did just find this 3 minute clip:

The first issue is that DiVinci toggles off "Use Mac display color profiles for viewers" by default. So it was not even using my P3/wide gamut Mac profile. The video also outlines color space settings for export.

Need to run some tests but it seems like its close to a solution...

Why are you using REC2020 settings when you’re just outputting for standard 709 web delivery?
