Newbie question: 1st movie - export playback not smooth

PostSat May 08, 2021 4:45 pm

Hello all,

This is my first try at the free version of Davinci Resolve. I normally use iMovie. I absolutely love the controls and workflow of DR. But my first try turns out to be disappointing. It must be my bad, I don't have much experience in video editing, though I did a lot of home video editing in iMovie.

So the problem is that when I export the project (using "Quick Export"), shots with panning are not smooth.

I tried two Macs: a new M1 MacBook Air and an old 2013 MacBook Pro 15" retina. Both show the exact same behaviour.

Could this be a fps issue?

Thank you.

Have you completed any training for Resolve?

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

What is the fps number in your timeline and in your clips?
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

I studied "introduction to Editing" carefully. The instructor mentioned that DR would ask to set project fps settings according to the first clips import, but it didn't.

I have a mixture of source clips:
- photos
- iPhone 8Plus videos @30fps
- Canon 5D4 videos @25fps

The timeline is set to 24 fps.

P.S. on posting a reply I keep getting the message that it will not be visible until approved by a moderator. is this intentional?

Thanks!

Got it.

In my opinion, the videos are a good overview for folks looking to switch, but once you decide to use Resolve, the manuals (below the videos) are much more useful instruction tools.

I recommend going through the Beginner's Guide as a first step before working on any real projects.

And for such a mix of camera speeds you'll need Studio, so you can use Optical Flow at the cost of long rendering times.
But try to switch to "Blend" for frame interpolation and see if you like it better.
