Resolve 17.2 startup performance (praise to dev team)

PostWed May 12, 2021 7:14 pm

I'm so happy right now, it's finally fixed! Resolve now takes 14 seconds to load here, before it took almost 2 minutes stuck in the splash screen for what seemed like an eternity, every single time... you knocked it out of the park with this update.

Thank you for listening and addressing this long-overdue issue! Your hard work is appreciated!

Second that. 17.2 loads in about 8 seconds, down from 40 seconds for 17.1.

I had an initial failure with the Advanced Panels, but a reboot solved it. Also 8 seconds from launch to Project Manager for me (on the 2019 Mac Pro), which is incredibly fast when you consider how much code is whooshing by.

I agree with the words of praise for Start! I can't say any more than that. I hope that the "GPU Memory Full" behavior, especially when using noise suppression, has been eliminated.

Hey Dev Team,

When ever I tried to launch the BMD Studio the application was doing some thing at the background not knowing what it is trying to call or invoke and then after struggling the BMD Studio would state not responding all of a sudden. The literally had to go to Application manager end the process , this step we had to repeat more than 3 times if your luck was good then the BMD would launch.

With this new update 17.2 the BMD application startup is quite faster from the previous Generations. Kudoos to the Dev team who was able getting to the crux of the code and debugging the code now BMD application takes few seconds to launch.

I would appreciate the Team during this Panademic have fixed around 70% and Keeping the Companies Prestige at the top and not letting down.

I guess Grant Petty (CEO) must be HAPPY now cause the most difficult hurdle is passed.

Any problems with 17.2?

I ask only because on the Facebook Resolve forums all I've seen are issues and complaints that make me pause about the upgrade. I'm using Studio 17.1.1 on a M1 Mac Mini 8GB.

I don't have the exact numbers, startup is faster BUT the shutdown is super fast , resolve doesn't linger anymore , prior version I could see in task manager resolve hanging around ( for like 15 secs ) after shutdown .

Agreed I notice a remarkable difference too even though I have just pimped my Mac to a 2TB OWC SSD from a 1TB one. The application feels quicker overall not just in the start up.

There are new features, excellent, the startup is foster, noticeable the part when you select project.
Overall welcome features.
The problems I have with this version which lead me to uninstalling it, is lack of stability.
I encounter freezing over the timeline that never happened before.
I encounter computer going crazy CPU going to 64% after closing Resolve. (I had to kill to resolve processes).
Most beta versions has been more stable. I definitely skip this version.
Version 17.1.1 is very stable for me, even GPU SLI bug I reported before is somehow not present.
Excellent work BlackMagic, we definitely need some fix up.
And one more, where is a switch off to feature off automatic saving. This feature can exist safely only on the very very stable software. And even then mistake which I make sometime is better not to save.
If you put alto saving, the feature off version control would be very very welcome. When you work on the project long time, it's increasing in value. You don't want to destroy it by unstable software or your mistake.
Overall Resolve is the best!!!

Yes! I just came here to post the same thing. I've been annoyed by Resolve's incredibly slow startup forever, so this is a much appreciated update. I now get like 5 seconds of splash screen max on my laptop.

Also, when did Resolve's subtitle tools get so much better? I looked back through some recent release notes and couldn't find any mention. Seems to be a huge improvement over what I remember...

:P

Yes, I agree, an excellent improvement.

Load time is now a quarter of previous.

But to get the full benefit, I had to clean up my database, by archiving old projects, etc. After the Splash Screens, BMDVRS seems to check the projects in the active database, so if you have hundreds of projects, then time is wasted.

Also, 17.2 seems to be Rock-Solid for me!! (17.1.1 was not).

Thanks to BM Devs for this.

Nuno Santos Lopes wrote:Hi everyone,

i am a bit confused here...
everyone says Resolve takes 8 seconds to boot at least to project page....
but mine takes around 23 secs to project page and then after i choose the project,

indeed version 17.2 has a faster boot than the previous ones....but 8 secs?!?
(i started it a 2nd time, while i wrote this post, and it took 19 secs to project page...
but it stays around 8 secs when the READY word appears...)
what can i do to faster my resolve boot?
i am on a Mac Pro Late 2013 3,5GHZ 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 with 64 gb of ram and mas os catalina.

and...just to check...
on GPU configuration, i have METAL choosed, and no ticks on any box of GPU processing mode and GPU
selection, because i also have an external GPU, and if i choose Auto, the system will work only with
one board...am i correct?

so below i have all the 3 boards selected:

external GPU, which is a AMD RADEON RX 580
and the two internals AMD FirePro D500, which on the type both say Discrete...why?

am i doing something wrong here?

Thanks.
Cheers.

I have a feeling it does indeed depend on hardware specs. I am seeing 4.7 second startup to project page and then 3 seconds from double-clicking a project until the full app is open and ready.

My system:
Mobo: Gigabyte X570 | AORUS WIFI PRO
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (3593 Mhz, 8-Core, 16 Logical Processors)
RAM: 32GB
GPU: GeForce GTX 1070, 1920 CUDA cores
OS: Windows 10 Pro

I was on an AMD RX 570 and saw a huge increase in performance after upgrading to a GTX 1070.

Start up time seems unaffected by the update on my end. In fact, now every click is followed by a 5-10sec beachball wait. This seems to only happen in existing projects. New projects are not affected.

Re: Resolve 17.2 startup performance (praise to dev team)

PostThu Aug 26, 2021 6:16 pm

In an earlier post, I was happy to state that Resolve's start-up time was now a speedy 8 seconds.

Normally, I sleep or hibernate my PC but when I fully close and then re-start the PC, Resolve starts up in a longer time, and this can vary. This evening, it took 31 seconds but on another occasion it was nearly a minute.

It appears that caching is responsible for the subsequent Resolve faster start-ups.

Is this behaviour typical ? has anybody else noticed this ?

Thank you.

I copy the video and audio files to be edited to a "working directory" of a fast SSD. After I have finished creating and exporting the video, all source files are moved to an archive on an HDD. If I forget to empty the cache completely, the start of DaVinci slows down regularly!

First launch after a complete power down requires OS checks that we can’t avoid, but it’s faster after the first launch.
