Fairlight 3.1 Audio SetUp ?

I'm currently building a 5.1 system for Fairlight. Currently I only have the two studio monitors and a Sub (LFE). So, for now, I will only be using the 3 speaker set up. So my question: How do I configure Fairlight to recognise there is a Sub Channel so that I can monitor and mix in 3.1. (Using the Left-Sub-Right).

I've seen that in the prefs (Video and Audio I/O) there is the Monitor Set Format which as a pull down list - 'LCR' which is (I guess) 3.1. But the the 'C' (I believe is Centre) needs to be the LFE .. there is no Left-Sub-Right configuration?!

Use the "2.1" Monitor Set format in Preferences > System > Video and Audio I/O > Speaker Setup since you are using a LR-LFE configuration.

There really is no such thing as 3.1
There is 2.1, which is stereo speakers with a sub, and a crossover setting the frequency point where the stereo mix is sent to the speakers above the crossover, and the sub below the crossover.
The crossover point can be handled by a monitor controller, amp, or some active subs have crossover control and a speaker feed out of them, so you sen it all to the sub then out of the sub to the left and right speakers.
Just mix in stereo till you get all your 6 speakers setup

I would probably do this by sending audio out via HDMI into a receiver, let it manage the sub.

If you want to use the sub then see if it has a built-in crossover and use that instead. In that case you'd go stereo out from Resolve/Fairlight into your sub, and then out from the sub (after its internal crossover) to your main speakers. That way you have bass management and (possibly) a full-range signal in your monitor chain, and you can deliver plain old stereo.

Nobody delivers L/R/LFE as far as I know.

Matthias: I’m using (or shortly will be) the Yamaha HS8S as my sub and daisy chaining out from there to 2 Yamaha HS7’s. If the HS8S daisy chains out, then I’m presuming there is a crossover built-in?

Yes, that sub has a crossover. You connect your left and right speakers to the XLR outputs.

Yes, I’ve slightly confused this term 3.1 in my post. I realised Resolve sees 3.1 as L,C,R and I was using 3.1 to emphasise the point I was using a sub and not just L and R. (Walter Murch probably did the same in that video I mentioned!). It was my lazy use of the term that was confusing, sorry!

Quite possibly? But I shall once/if I can find the video.. I’m certain it was on YouTube and I seem to remember he was discussing how he likes to stand during editing and the fact he uses a draughtsman’s working board as an edit desk etc..
