Rev.com EDL issues

PostFri May 14, 2021 2:38 pm

I'm working on a documentary using rev.com's transcription features to highlight a transcription and export an EDL. They have an online tutorial on how to export the EDL and import it into Resolve. Unfortunately, it is not working for me or the other editor on the project. When we import the EDL we get a timeline that syncs to other videos in the current project and is more or less a jumbled mess. The referenced original file is in the project, so we're at a loss as to why the EDL isn't translating. We've pretty much determined this is a Resolve (we're on 17.2) issue and not the EDL being generated by rev.com. It also works perfectly in Premiere Pro (we don't want to use - understandably) Any help would be appreciated!

You may want to try Simon Says Transcription. It works directly with Resolve and it attaches transcription text into Resolve clip markers. The text is searchable in the bin.

I've been having mixed results also..

I love using Rev.com for transcription, and the EDL is a bonus, but I had to mess with it to get it to work on many occasions on mini-documentary interviews.

First complaint.. rev puts a file size on video uploads, so I just upload my audio.

I'll export my EDL from that (after picking selects).

In resolve, I typically sync the braw file with my Mixpre.wav file to make a timeline with the braw file and new Synced audio file. I make sure the NEW timeline starts at 00:00:00:00 timecode.

I right click on this new timeline(lets say, called "person selects") and import AAF/EDL/XML/..." and find the .EDL file from rev.

A popup shows up, and I make sure to change the timeline name to something like "selects from rev", and, also, change the EDL framerate to 30fps(since that is what Rev.com exports the EDL at, but I'm filming and recording in 23.976fps) Click OK.

The next step is important.. I think. Another popup from resolve comes up with checkmarks of your bins. I narrow the bin down, and sometimes, isolate the new timeline in its own bin, only selecting that one. I think if you dont do this, and the EDL file name isnt recognized, it just grabs what it thinks you want, hence the random video files.

I've had multiple successes doing this, but recently, on a project today, I have not. LOL. so.. i dont know what I did wrong again.

When it is done right, here is what it can look like on a new timeline:

Image

It slices up the timeline or clip it finds, and divides the clip into snippets to copy/paste to a new timeline. Not sure its ideal for most workflows, but it saved time for me, even flipping back and forth.

I just can't get it to work EVERYTIME.

Opening the EDL in a text editor, its just referencing the time of the file you uploaded to rev, so this could technically work on any "clip" you tell it to. I just am not aware of a way to tell resolve, hey, use this EDL's timecode on THIS selected timeline. It seems to want to search for whatever name is in the EDL file.. and I don't know if I can change that to a Timeline's name over a specific file name (cause I sync audio to video.. I don't want to render a whole new clip, although, that may work)

Hope this makes some sort of sense.. maybe it can be fixed, or I'm just not doing it right.
