Problems importing MKV videos into 17.2

PostFri May 14, 2021 6:03 pm

I have tried to import 7 different MKV videos downloaded from YouTube into 17.2 but it only imports the audio portion. Handbrake has no trouble converting them. Am I missing something?

If it's from YT it will contain VP9, which AFAIK Resolve doesn't support. Id convert to lossless H264 using NVENC. I posted the ffmpeg line sometime in this forum.

Thank you, Peter. I thought it might be something like this. Fortunately Handbrake (which seems to incorporate NVENC) converts it easily, although I was hoping to avoid this step.

Actually Resolve does support VP9 ... not sure if it supports VP9 inside MKV though.

Based on the supported codec PDF it supports it in mov only, but quicktime file format doesn't officially support VP9, so no clue how that works.

I also get only audio when importing MKV clips into Resolve. Mine are from OBS, using NVIDIA HEVC.

If I use OBS to remux the clip to MP4 (no reencoding, it just changes the container), it opens fine.

Here's the media info MPC shows of one of the test files:

Hi

Can you post a shareable link to a sample MKV file?

MKV files are containers. If the video and audio codecs inside are Studio only, or supported only on specific platforms, Resolve will interpret them that way.

I did another quick test clip. Same settings as mentioned above, and confirmed the same issue occurs on my second system (also running Resolve Studio 17.2).

I had to change the dots to spaces in the URL as the forum won't let me post a URL, but I figure it should be OK in this case since I was asked to.

MKV file that gets only audio:
www dropbox com/s/b3g5lxkihmugxi1/2021-05-17%2004-52-02.mkv?dl=1

MP4 file of the same clip that gets both video and audio, created with OBS's "remux" option, so no reencoding was done:
www dropbox com/s/92xzr33q5xcofok/2021-05-17%2004-52-02.mp4?dl=1

(The video does say "No Signal", but that's just what the capture card outputs when nothing is sent to it.)

I can confirm that, no video in 17.2 build 11.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

But the sample is HEVC, not VP9.

Which issue?

When importing MKV files (at least those created from OBS; see files linked above for an example) they show up as audio only clips instead of videos.

I had a problem with an MP4 recording made by OBS this morning. Although OBS is set to record 1920x1080 the recording was actually 1920x1072. DR would not import the video. I converted it to MP4 using Aiseesoft Video Converter Ultimate which gave a file that was 1920x1080 and then DR was able to import it with the video. The frame height is the only thing I could see that was changed. Well, the new file is 142MB while the original is 58MB so that is a significant difference! I hope this helps someone else!
